The short version
Monarch suits people who want one place for every account, a choice of budget styles and a free week to try it: $14.99 a month or $99.99 a year. Simplifi suits people who want a lower first-year price, $3.99 a month billed annually, and a daily spending plan, but it has no free trial and renews at the then-current rate. In both, a partner joins at no extra cost and sees everything.

How we compared
Both apps do the same basic job, so the differences are in the details that cost money or time later. We looked at five things:
- Price and trial. What the first year costs, what the second costs, and whether you can try it before you pay.
- How budgeting works. What the app asks you to set up and what it shows you each day.
- Couples. Whether a partner pays, and what they see.
- Platforms and bank connections. Where it runs, and how well reviewers say it stays connected.
- What people say. App Store reviews from 2026.
We read Monarch's pricing, couples, budgeting and planning pages and Quicken's Simplifi product page and help articles, plus the app stores. Simplifi's iPhone app is listed as Quicken's app, shared with other Quicken products, so its rating isn't Simplifi's alone and we don't show it. Every fact is numbered to its source at the end.
Monarch vs Simplifi price and trial
Monarch: The pricing page does not say which tier the monthly price belongs to.[1][2] It lists $14.99 a month or $99.99 billed yearly. Paying monthly for a year comes to $179.88, so the yearly plan saves $79.89.[1] The App Store also shows a Plus plan at $199.99 a year; Monarch's pricing page says Plus adds forecasting tools, tracking several income sources and deeper investment tracking.[1][2]
Simplifi: Quicken's product page shows $3.99 a month billed annually, with $6.99 beside it. The page says the offer is for the first year when ordered directly from Quicken by November 26, 2026, and does not label the $6.99.[12] Only annual plans are offered, and renewals are charged at the full standard price.[16] So the honest first-year comparison is about $48 for Simplifi against $99.99 for Monarch, and the second year is a question mark until you see the renewal price.
Trial. The pricing page says "Your first week is on us." The App Store says the app is free to try for 7 days before a monthly or annual membership is billed. Neither says whether a card is needed.[1][2] "While we do not offer a free trial" there is a 30-day money-back guarantee from the original purchase date, for purchases made directly on Quicken.com.[16] That difference matters, because reviews of both apps mention accounts that disconnect. With Monarch you can find out in a week. With Simplifi you can find out inside 30 days, but only if you bought directly from Quicken. A March 2026 reviewer says Apple refused a refund on a purchase made through the App Store.[15][18]
Discounts. New users can get 30% off Core for one year with code WELCOME. It covers the annual Core plan only, cannot be combined with other offers, and may expire at any time.[1] For every price, plan and promo Monarch lists, see Monarch pricing in 2026.
How budgeting works in each
Monarch offers two styles. Two ways to budget: Flex, which splits spending into fixed, flexible and non-monthly buckets and gives one main number to watch, or Category budgeting.[2][7] Rollovers: money left in a category carries into the next month, to cover bills that do not come every month.[7] It also forecasts spending into future months. The pricing page lists forecasting tools under Plus.[1][7] Goals work like this: Goals with a target amount, a planned monthly contribution and an image. You can assign an account to a goal and the app tracks progress from its balance.[8]
Simplifi starts from a plan. Its page lists A spending plan that shows what you can spend per day.[12] and Projected cash flow with "what-if" scenarios.[12] Tracks upcoming bills and subscriptions and shows all your subscriptions.[12] Savings goals, reports and insights.[12]
Put plainly, Monarch gives you two budget methods to choose from and rollovers, while Simplifi gives you one number per day and a projection of where your balance is heading. If you like to watch a single figure, Simplifi's framing is closer. If you want to set a limit in every category and carry the leftovers forward, Monarch's Category budget is closer.
Investments and extras
Both track investments. Investment tracking with cost basis, performance analysis and real-time quotes.[12] A retirement planner.[12] Monarch tracks net worth across connected accounts, and its Plus tier is where the deeper investment tracking sits.[1][2] Simplifi also has Quicken Assist, an in-product AI chat that uses your Simplifi data; Quicken says no actions are taken without your review and approval.[13]
Support is a difference too. Support by phone (Monday to Friday), live chat seven days a week, an AI assistant after chat hours and a community forum, all included with every subscription.[13]
Couples and sharing
Both let a partner in without a second subscription, and both share everything. The details differ.
- Monarch: A partner joins at no extra cost under the same subscription and gets their own login. The page says, "Partners will each have their own login, but can view each other's data."[5][6] Both partners see everything. The page says, "both parties will have full visibility into all accounts and transactions associated with it," and tells people to check they are comfortable with that first. The help center adds: "You cannot hide bank accounts or transactions in Monarch."[5][6][10]
- Simplifi: Spaces sharing: you can share your data with one additional member. They need their own Quicken ID but not their own subscription, and must accept the invite on the web app.[12][14] Sharing is full access to the one shared space. Sharing specific accounts or features is not available yet, and the article says it "may be added" in the future. You can remove a member at any time.[14]
Two catches stand out. Simplifi allows one additional member, and the invited person has to accept on the web app, because signing in on the mobile app prompts them to subscribe.[14] Monarch's side of the story has its own wrinkle: one 3-star App Store reviewer from August 2026 says they could not make a spouse's membership work with the account already started.[9] Whichever you pick, test the invite on day one.
On splitting a shared cost: The couples page does not describe splitting an expense between two people. It describes shared goals that two people fund from separate accounts, and tagging a partner to review a transaction.[5][6] Simplifi's sharing article describes a shared space, not a way to divide a bill. If who owes whom is the point, see the best budgeting apps for couples.
Platforms and bank connections
Both list iPhone, Android and web apps. A web app plus mobile apps for iOS and Android, usable in the U.S. and Canada.[12][16] "Certain features not supported on mobile apps."[12] Not usable abroad: sign-in may fail outside the U.S. and Canada or when using a VPN.[16] Monarch recommends signing up on the web rather than through the Apple or Google stores.[1]
On connections, Automatically categorizes transactions and connects to over 14,000 financial institutions.[12] Connects bank accounts, credit cards, loans, investment accounts and real estate, through 13,000+ financial institutions.[4] The numbers are close, and reviewers of both complain about drops. Connections that drop. App Store reviewers describe accounts that "disconnect all the time" and a bank that stayed broken for a month.[9] Bank connections: App Store reviewers in 2026 report main banks disconnecting, accounts that will not sync, and long waits for fixes.[18] The useful test is your own banks, in the first week.
What people say
We couldn't read Reddit, so these are App Store reviews from 2026. Reviews skew toward people with a problem or a strong feeling, so read them as examples, not a vote.
Monarch
“My wife loves being able to see every thing in one place. It took us 10 years to find this app. Thank you monarch!”Read it where it was said ↗
The complaints about Monarch in 2026 reviews are about billing and connections: Price against what the plan includes. One reviewer calls it "double the competitors" with no alerts near a budget.[9] Billing after cancelling. Several App Store reviews from July to October 2026 say they were billed after they cancelled or found it hard to cancel.[9]
Simplifi
“I’ve been waiting for a fix on my main bank for almost a month. Every time I contact they just say there’s no updates. Going to use something else.”Read it where it was said ↗
The other complaints are about features and money: Features removed: 2026 reviewers say rule creation on recategorizing and the "spending over time" reports were taken out, with some features sent to the website.[18] Setup effort: reviewers say it takes a lot of time to link accounts and categorize.[18] On the plus side, 2026 reviewers describe it as easy to set up for what it costs, though one says setup takes some time.[18] The App Store reviews we read for Simplifi are on Quicken's general app, so a few may be about other Quicken plans.

A third option
We make Wonderful, so weigh this as you would any maker's note. Each person chooses, account by account, whether the other sees everything, only totals, or nothing.[20] The difference from both apps above is that sharing is per account instead of all or nothing, and shared costs split evenly, by income, or any way you choose, and it keeps a running total of who owes whom.[21] Tracks who owes whom, so there's no separate split app.[21] Wonderful costs $14.99 a month or $99 a year for both of you, has no free plan after the trial, and gives no investment advice. It also has no iPhone or Android app yet. If you keep your own accounts and share some bills, it is worth a look.
Questions people ask
Monarch vs Simplifi: which is better?
Neither wins for everyone. Monarch costs $14.99 a month or $99.99 a year, has a free first week, and has a Flex budget and a Category budget. Simplifi shows $3.99 a month billed annually for the first year, has no free trial, and builds a spending plan with cash-flow projections. Pick on price after year one, the trial and how your partner joins.
Is Simplifi cheaper than Monarch?
In the first year, yes, if the $3.99 a month offer holds: about $48 against Monarch's $99.99 billed yearly. Quicken's page says the offer is for the first year of orders made directly from Quicken, and that renewal is at the then-current rate. Its page also shows $6.99 beside the offer without saying what it is, so the second-year price is not clear from the page.
Does Simplifi have a free trial like Monarch?
No. Quicken's help center says it does not offer a free trial, but gives a 30-day money-back guarantee on purchases made directly on Quicken.com. Monarch's pricing page says the first week is free.
Is Quicken Simplifi the same as Quicken?
Simplifi is made by Quicken Inc. but is a separate product from Quicken Classic, which is desktop software for Windows and Mac with a companion phone app. If you searched Monarch vs Quicken, Simplifi is the closer match: it is a web and mobile app, like Monarch.
Can my partner use Monarch or Simplifi with me?
Yes in both, with no second subscription. Monarch gives a partner their own login and both of you see all accounts and transactions. Simplifi shares one space with one additional member, who needs their own Quicken ID, and sharing specific accounts is not available yet.
Can I hide an account from my partner in Monarch or Simplifi?
Not from what their pages say. Monarch's couples page says both partners have full visibility into all accounts and transactions. Simplifi's help article says sharing specific accounts or features is not available yet. Check Monarch's help center before you decide.
Do Monarch and Simplifi work on Android?
Both list iPhone, Android and web apps. Simplifi's page notes that certain features are not supported on its mobile apps, and that it works in the U.S. and Canada.
Which has more bank connections, Monarch or Simplifi?
Simplifi's page says it connects to over 14,000 financial institutions. Monarch's home page says 13,000+. Both numbers are the apps' own claims, and reviews of both mention accounts that disconnect, so check your own banks in the trial or the refund window.
How do I cancel Monarch or Simplifi?
Monarch's pricing page says you can cancel anytime and that cancelling before the free week ends means you are not charged. Quicken's help center says cancelling turns off auto-renewal and keeps access until the billing period ends. If you bought Simplifi through Apple, Apple decides refunds.
