Checked October 22, 2026
Biweekly pay is a paycheck every two weeks, which is 26 paychecks a year. Most months have two. Two months a year have three: for a payday that starts Friday, January 2, 2026 they are January and July, and for one that starts Friday, January 9 they are May and October. The IRS counts 26 pay periods a year for biweekly pay.
What is biweekly pay?
It means you are paid every two weeks, on the same weekday. Not twice a month. The IRS lists the pay periods in a year this way: weekly is 52, biweekly is 26, semimonthly is 24, and monthly is 12.
A year has 52 weeks and a day or two. Every 14 days gives you 26 paychecks, and sometimes a 27th when the year starts on your payday. In 2027, a schedule with a payday on Friday, January 1 has 27 paydays, with the last on December 31.
Why two months have three paychecks
Twelve months at two paychecks each is 24. You get 26, so two months pick up an extra. A month has three when it holds three paydays 14 days apart, which needs the first one to land on day 1, 2 or 3 of a 31-day month, or day 1 or 2 of a 30-day one. In a 28-day February it can never happen.

Biweekly vs semimonthly
| Biweekly | Semimonthly | |
|---|---|---|
| When | Every 14 days, same weekday | Twice a month, on set dates (like the 15th and the last day) |
| Paychecks a year | 26 | 24 |
| On a $78,000 salary, before tax | $3,000 each | $3,250 each |
| Months with an extra check | 2 a year | None |
The salary is the same either way. The difference is that semimonthly checks are bigger and land on the same dates each month, while biweekly checks are smaller and land on the same weekday.
Budgeting on two paychecks a month so the third is extra
Bills come monthly, so a plan built on two paychecks a month works in all 12. In the two months with a third, that paycheck is extra. Some ways people use it: top up savings, pay down a debt, or save for a bill that comes once a year. How much goes where is your call. The paycheck savings calculator shows what Fidelity's and Ramit Sethi's plans set aside per paycheck.
To see the size of the gain, multiply one paycheck by 26 and divide by 12. With $2,400 take-home, that is $5,200 a month on average, against $4,800 if you count only two. The $400 gap a month is the two extra paychecks spread over the year.
If you share bills with a partner, the third paycheck changes the split too. See how couples split bills by income.
