Average grocery cost per month for two people

What a couple's groceries cost on the USDA's four food plans, what one person's cost, and how to split and trim the bill.

Checked October 27, 2026

About $630 to $1,008 a month for two adults, depending on how you eat. That is the USDA's September 2026 cost of groceries for a couple aged 19 to 50, from its Thrifty plan ($630) to its Liberal plan ($1,008). One adult is about $305 to $584.

There is no single average, because it depends on what you buy and how often you cook. The USDA publishes a monthly price for four levels of eating, all of them nutritious and all of them made at home. They make a good yardstick for your own number.

Average grocery cost per month for 2

These are the USDA's U.S. average costs for September 2026, issued in October 2026, for a man and a woman. The USDA prices each person as if they lived in a household of four, and tells you to add up the people and then add 10 percent for a household of two. We did that arithmetic and rounded to the dollar.

USDA planWoman 19-50Man 19-50Couple, per month
Thrifty$253.90$319.00$630
Low-Cost$276.30$317.70$653
Moderate-Cost$336.40$398.40$808
Liberal$429.60$486.80$1,008
USDA monthly costs for one person in a household of four, September 2026 (the Thrifty plan's age group is 20 to 50). The couple column adds the two people, then adds the USDA's 10 percent for a household of 2, rounded to the dollar.

If you read “average food cost per month” as everything you eat, remember these figures leave out restaurants, takeout and delivery. Every plan assumes all meals and snacks are prepared at home.

Average grocery cost per month for 1

A household of one pays more per person. The USDA says to add 20 percent to the four-person price for a household of 1. The same arithmetic, rounded to the dollar:

USDA planOne woman, 19-50One man, 19-50
Thrifty$305$383
Low-Cost$332$381
Moderate-Cost$404$478
Liberal$516$584
Each figure is the USDA's monthly cost for that age and sex in a household of four, plus the USDA's 20 percent for a household of 1, September 2026.

Two people sharing a kitchen cost less than two people each buying for one. A couple at the Moderate-Cost level pays $808, where two adults shopping alone would pay $882 ($404 plus $478).

Grocery cost for two, per week and by age

The monthly USDA figure is the weekly cost times 4.333. If you shop weekly, this is the number to hold your receipts against.

USDA planCouple 19-50, per weekCouple 19-50, per monthCouple 51-70, per month
Thrifty$145$630$569
Low-Cost$151$653$625
Moderate-Cost$186$808$777
Liberal$233$1,008$933
USDA September 2026 monthly costs for one woman and one man in the age group, added, plus the USDA's 10 percent for a household of 2, rounded to the dollar. Weekly is the monthly figure divided by 4.333. The Thrifty plan's younger group is 20 to 50.

What two people actually spend

The USDA plans price a nutritious diet, not what people buy. The Bureau of Labor Statistics asks households what they spent. In 2024, two-person households spent $6,088 a year on food at home, $507 a month, and one-person households $3,395, $283 a month. Another $339 a month (two people) went to food away from home, which is on top of groceries. What these numbers are, and are not

  • They are a nutritious diet priced by the USDA, not what households report spending.
  • They are U.S. averages. Your city, your store and your diet move them.
  • They are updated every month for food prices, so next month's report will be a little different.
  • Alaska and Hawaii are priced separately by the USDA, and we have left them out.

Use the tables to see where you sit. If you spend $1,100 on groceries as a couple and the Liberal plan is $1,008, that is a number worth looking at before you look at anything else.

How to split groceries as a couple

Groceries come in small pieces every week, so they are hard to keep even by feel. There are two common rules:

  • 50/50. Each of you pays half. It is easy to explain and easy to track, and it works well when your pay is close.
  • By income. Each of you pays the same share of your pay. If one of you brings home 60 percent of the household's money, that person covers 60 percent of the food. It keeps the lower earner from giving up a bigger slice of what they have.

Neither is the right one. See what each rule does to your two pays with the fair split calculator, or read how to split bills by income. Whichever you pick, use it for the whole shared list so you are not re-deciding every receipt. One person paying with a card and the other paying them back is fine, as long as you can both see who is owed what.

Ways to bring the number down

  • Know your real number first. Add up three months of grocery charges and divide by three.
  • Plan dinners around what you already have. Food you throw out is money you spent twice.
  • Cook more of the week at home. For a couple, the USDA prices the Thrifty plan $378 a month under the Liberal plan, so how you shop and cook moves the number.
  • Buy the staples in bulk, the rice, beans, oats and frozen vegetables you use every week.
  • Try the store brand on three things you buy often.
  • Set a monthly line for groceries and check it mid-month, not at the end.

Keep restaurants in a separate line. When groceries and eating out sit in one pile, a $120 takeout week hides inside a grocery bill that looks too high.

Questions people ask

How much do two people actually spend on groceries a month?

Two-person households spent $6,088 a year on food at home in 2024, about $507 a month, per the Bureau of Labor Statistics. One-person households spent $3,395, about $283. That is below the USDA's cost for a couple ($630 and up) because the USDA prices a full diet at four set levels and the survey averages everyone.

How much is groceries for 2 people per week?

On the USDA's September 2026 plans, a couple aged 19 to 50 spends about $145 a week on Thrifty, $151 on Low-Cost, $186 on Moderate-Cost and $233 on Liberal. We divided the monthly figure by 4.333, the USDA's weeks per month.

What does a couple in their 50s and 60s spend on groceries?

A couple aged 51 to 70 comes to about $569 a month on Thrifty, $625 on Low-Cost, $777 on Moderate-Cost and $933 on Liberal, using the USDA's September 2026 prices and its 10 percent for a household of 2.

What is the average grocery cost per month for 2 people?

On the USDA's food plans for September 2026, a couple aged 19 to 50 spends about $630 a month on the Thrifty plan, $653 on Low-Cost, $808 on Moderate-Cost and $1,008 on Liberal. Those are the cost of a nutritious diet with every meal and snack made at home, not what the average household actually spends.

What is the average grocery cost per month for 1 person?

For one adult aged 19 to 50, the USDA's September 2026 plans come to about $305 to $383 a month on Thrifty, $332 to $381 on Low-Cost, $404 to $478 on Moderate-Cost and $516 to $584 on Liberal. The lower figure is a woman, the higher a man, because the USDA prices the two groups differently.

Is that the average food cost per month, including restaurants?

No. The USDA plans price groceries only. They assume all meals and snacks are prepared at home, so eating out, delivery and coffee shops come on top.

Why is it more per person to feed one than two?

Food is cheaper per person in a bigger household. The USDA adds 20 percent to the cost for a household of 1, 10 percent for 2, and subtracts 5 percent for 5 or 6 people.

Should we split groceries 50/50 or by income?

Either can be fair. Splitting 50/50 is simple when you earn about the same. Splitting by income keeps the lower earner from carrying a bigger share of their pay. Pick the one you both think is fair, and use the same rule for the whole shared list.

How do we lower our grocery bill?

Start by finding out what you spend now. Then plan meals around what is already in the house, buy staples in bulk, cook more dinners at home, and compare store brands.
