Biweekly vs semimonthly pay
Same salary, different calendar. Biweekly brings 26 paychecks a year and semimonthly brings 24. Here is what that does to each check and to your bills.
Checked October 22, 2026
Biweekly pay lands every 14 days, which is 26 paychecks a year. Semimonthly lands twice a month on set dates, which is 24. The IRS lists both counts. A $65,000.00 salary is $2,500.00 a check biweekly and $2,708.33 a check semimonthly, before tax. The year adds up the same.
Biweekly vs semimonthly: what is different
Biweekly is every other week, on the same weekday. If you are paid on a Friday, the next is 14 days later. Semimonthly is two dates a month, like the 15th and the last day. Those dates move around the week, so ask payroll what happens when one lands on a weekend.
The consequence is the count. Twelve months at two checks is 24 semimonthly paychecks. Biweekly gives 26, so two months a year have three paychecks. The 2026 biweekly payroll calendar lists every date.
Weekly or biweekly: the four common schedules
| Schedule | Paychecks a year | Each check on $65,000.00 a year, before tax | Lands |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weekly | 52 | $1,250.00 | Every week, same weekday |
| Biweekly | 26 | $2,500.00 | Every 14 days, same weekday |
| Semimonthly | 24 | $2,708.33 | Twice a month, on set dates |
| Monthly | 12 | $5,416.67 | Once a month |
Every row is the same $65,000.00. Only the size and the rhythm change. A biweekly check is about 8% smaller than a semimonthly one, because the same year is cut into more pieces.
What the schedule is, and who sets it
The US Department of Labor keeps a table of state payday requirements, with columns for weekly, bi-weekly, semi-monthly and monthly. States differ on how often an employer must pay and on which schedules are allowed, and some say little. The page says to check with the state labor office for official information. Inside those limits, the employer picks the schedule, which is why a company can pay differently from the place down the road. Nothing here says which one yours is. Your pay stub does.
Hours and overtime on a biweekly schedule
One thing does not change with the schedule. The Department of Labor says overtime under the federal FLSA is figured by the workweek, a fixed recurring period of 168 hours, and that averaging hours over two or more weeks is not permitted. So a biweekly check covers two workweeks, and overtime in one of them is not canceled by a short week in the other.
What it means for your budget and bills
Bills come monthly, and pay does not line up with them evenly.
- Biweekly: two checks in most months, three in two. Build the budget on two, and let the third be extra.
- Semimonthly: always two, on the same dates. A bill due on the 1st or the 16th can be matched to a check.
- Weekly: four checks most months, five in some. Same idea as biweekly, with smaller steps.
- Monthly: one check has to cover the whole month, so the timing of each bill matters most.
If two of you are paid on different schedules, one biweekly and one semimonthly, it gets easier to think in monthly amounts for both. See how couples split bills by income. Questions people ask
What is the difference between biweekly and semimonthly?
Biweekly is every 14 days, on the same weekday, so 26 paychecks a year. Semimonthly is twice a month on set dates, like the 15th and the last day, so 24 a year. For the same salary, each biweekly check is smaller.
Is it better to be paid weekly or biweekly?
Neither brings more money. The year adds up the same. Weekly is 52 smaller checks, so money arrives more often. Biweekly is 26 larger ones. Which is easier depends on when your bills are due and how you like to budget.
Does biweekly pay more than semimonthly?
No. On a $65,000.00 salary, 26 checks are $2,500.00 each and 24 are $2,708.33 each, and the year is the same $65,000.00 before tax.
Does Amazon, Target or Starbucks pay weekly or biweekly?
Pay schedules are set by each employer, and they can differ by role, state and year. Your offer letter, pay stub or payroll portal is the place to check. This page does not state any company's schedule.
Is biweekly the same as twice a month?
No. Twice a month is semimonthly, on two dates. Biweekly is every other week, which gives 26 paychecks, and two months a year get three.
How should I budget on biweekly pay?
Build the budget on two paychecks a month, and treat the third paycheck in a three-paycheck month as extra. The 2026 calendar shows which months those are.
