State by state
Alaska
- Alaska has no individual income tax, so no state income tax is withheld from a paycheck.
- Workers do pay a share of unemployment insurance: the 2026 employee rate is 0.50% of wages up to a taxable wage base of $54,200, which is at most $271 a year.
- Alaska's Tax Division points to the Department of Labor and Workforce Development for the unemployment insurance tax.
Florida
- Florida does not impose a personal income tax, so no state income tax is withheld from a paycheck.
- Florida also has no inheritance tax, gift tax, or tax on intangible personal property.
Nevada
- Nevada does not tax wages. The Department of Taxation says Nevada residents do not pay state tax on income earned from salaries, wages or similar compensation.
- The Department says the state does not impose an income tax on individuals, and that someone who lives and works in Nevada does not need to file a state income tax return on wages.
New Hampshire
- New Hampshire does not tax wages. The Department of Revenue Administration's list of the taxes it administers (Taxes at a Glance) has no tax on wages or salaries.
- The state's only income tax was on interest and dividends. It was repealed for tax periods beginning on or after January 1, 2025.
South Dakota
- South Dakota does not impose a state income tax, so none is taken from a paycheck.
- Only federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare come out of pay.
Tennessee
- Tennessee does not tax wages. The Department of Revenue's list of the taxes it administers has no tax on wages or salaries, and the Hall income tax it lists as archived applied only to interest and dividends.
- The Hall income tax was repealed for tax periods beginning January 1, 2021 or later.
- Only federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare come out of pay.
Texas
- Texas has no state income tax, so none is taken from a paycheck.
- Only federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare come out of pay.
Washington
- Washington does not currently have an individual income tax, so no state income tax is taken from a paycheck.
- Two employee-paid programs are. Paid Family and Medical Leave has a 2026 premium of 1.13% of wages up to $184,500, and at employers with 50 or more employees the worker pays 71.43% of it, about 0.81% of pay. Smaller employers do not have to pay the employer share.
- WA Cares, the long-term care program, takes 0.58% of all wages, with no cap, and is paid entirely by the employee.
- A new 9.9% tax on adjusted gross income over $1 million starts January 1, 2028, so it does not apply to 2026 pay.
Wyoming
- Wyoming does not have an individual income tax, so none is taken from a paycheck.
- Only federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare come out of pay.
No income tax isn't no tax
These states raise money in other ways, like sales and property taxes, which this guide doesn't cover. For a paycheck, though, the difference is plain: compare any of them with a state that taxes wages in the calculator.
Questions people ask
Which states have no income tax?
9 states don't tax wages: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming. Each one's own revenue pages say so; they are listed under Sources.
Does Texas have a state income tax?
No. Texas doesn't tax wages, so a paycheck there loses only federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare.
Do you still pay federal tax in a state with no income tax?
Yes. Federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare come out of every paycheck in every state. On $65,000 a year, single, that's about $10,593 a year.
Is anything else taken out of a paycheck in these states?
In some, yes: Washington takes paid family and medical leave and long-term care premiums from wages, for example. The table below lists what each state takes, from its own pages.
