Iowa school districts can add an income surtax (rates on the Department of Revenue's 2025 list run from 0% up to 20% of your Iowa income tax), and six counties (Appanoose, Cass, Pocahontas, Sac, Shelby and Winnebago) add a 1% local option surtax. The Department of Revenue publishes the rate by school district each year. Neither is included in the calculator.
An estimate for 2026: the year's income tax spread evenly over your paychecks, using the standard deduction. Your employer uses the IRS withholding tables and your W-4, so a real paycheck can be a little different. Credits (like the child tax credit), other income and local taxes aren't included.
How Iowa taxes a paycheck
- Iowa taxes all taxable income at one flat rate of 3.8% in 2026, under Senate File 2442.
- Iowa taxable income starts from federal taxable income, so the calculator uses the pay left after the federal standard deduction.
- Iowa gives a $40 personal credit per person (two for a married couple filing jointly or a head of household), taken off the tax.
- The Department of Revenue says the Iowa withholding formula changed for 2026 to account for federal tax law changes.
Iowa has a flat income tax of 3.8%. There is also a credit of $40 off the tax. Traditional 401(k) contributions come out of Iowa taxable pay.
