An estimate for 2026: the year's income tax spread evenly over your paychecks, using the standard deduction. Your employer uses the IRS withholding tables and your W-4, so a real paycheck can be a little different. Credits (like the child tax credit), other income and local taxes aren't included.

How Montana taxes a paycheck

  • Montana starts from your federal taxable income, so the federal standard deduction is also Montana's. It has no separate standard deduction and no personal or dependent exemptions.
  • For 2026 there are two rates: 4.7 percent up to $47,500 for single filers ($71,250 for heads of household, $95,000 for joint filers) and 5.65 percent above that. The top rate was 5.9 percent in 2025.
  • A law passed in 2025 sets the top rate to 5.4 percent and widens the lower bracket for 2027.
  • Montana withholding now follows the federal method and the federal standard deduction for the employee's filing status.

Montana has 2 tax brackets, from 4.7% up to 5.65%. It starts from federal taxable income, so the federal standard deduction counts. Traditional 401(k) contributions come out of Montana taxable pay.
