An estimate for 2026: the year's income tax spread evenly over your paychecks, using the standard deduction. Your employer uses the IRS withholding tables and your W-4, so a real paycheck can be a little different. Credits (like the child tax credit), other income and local taxes aren't included.
How New York taxes a paycheck
- New York's 2026 withholding tables reflect enacted rate cuts: the first five state rates are 3.9%, 4.4%, 5.15%, 5.4% and 5.9%. Above $215,400 for a single filer the rates are 6.85%, then 9.65%, 10.3% and 10.9%.
- A single filer pays 3.9% up to $8,500, 4.4% to $11,700, 5.15% to $13,900, 5.4% to $80,650 and 5.9% to $215,400. Joint filers and heads of household have wider brackets, shown below. The state's 2026 return schedule isn't out, so the bracket cutoffs, standard deductions and rates above 5.9% are from its 2025 instructions.
- The standard deduction is $8,000 for a single filer, $16,050 for joint filers and $11,200 for a head of household. Each dependent has a $1,000 exemption.
- Filers with New York adjusted gross income over $107,650 lose part of the benefit of the lower brackets through a separate tax computation worksheet, which the calculator does not apply.
- Workers pay two small payroll programs: disability insurance at 0.5% of wages, capped at 60 cents a week, where the employer collects it, and Paid Family Leave at 0.432% of wages, capped at $411.91 a year in 2026.
New York has 9 tax brackets, from 3.9% up to 10.9%. A single filer gets a standard deduction of $8,000. Traditional 401(k) contributions come out of New York taxable pay.

Local income tax in New York
New York City residents also pay a city income tax, and Yonkers residents pay a resident surcharge. Neither is included in the calculator.
New York City residents pay a city income tax on top of the state's. Employers withhold it with its own 2026 tables (the Tax Department's NYS-50-T-NYC), so a city resident's paycheck is smaller than the state's figures alone suggest. The calculator doesn't include it.
Yonkers residents pay a resident surcharge of 16.75% of their New York State tax. People who work in Yonkers but live elsewhere pay a nonresident earnings tax, withheld at 0.50% on supplemental pay (the Tax Department's NYS-50-T-Y, 2026).
How often New York employers pay
The New York Department of Labor says manual workers must be paid weekly, and clerical and other workers at least twice a month. Employers that meet certain criteria can apply for permission to pay manual workers less often than weekly, and the department keeps a list of employers approved to pay them biweekly.
