An estimate for 2026: the year's income tax spread evenly over your paychecks, using the standard deduction. Your employer uses the IRS withholding tables and your W-4, so a real paycheck can be a little different. Credits (like the child tax credit), other income and local taxes aren't included.
How West Virginia taxes a paycheck
- A 2026 law (SB 392, signed March 31, 2026 and retroactive to January 1) cut West Virginia's rates by about 5%. They now run from 2.11% to 4.58% in five brackets.
- Single filers, joint filers and heads of household use the same brackets: 2.11% to $10,000, 2.81% to $25,000, 3.16% to $40,000, 4.22% to $60,000 and 4.58% above.
- The state's withholding tables subtract a $2,000 personal exemption for each exemption claimed, and list no standard deduction.
- The calculator leaves a traditional 401(k) deferral out of West Virginia wages; the sources above do not address it.
West Virginia has 5 tax brackets, from 2.11% up to 4.58%. There is no standard deduction. A single filer gets a personal exemption of $2,000. Traditional 401(k) contributions come out of West Virginia taxable pay.
