What is a savings rate? Meaning, and how to calculate yours

Your savings rate is the share of your income that you save. How to calculate it from take-home or gross pay, with a worked example and a couple's view.

Checked October 22, 2026

Your savings rate is the percentage of your income that you save instead of spend. Divide what you saved by what you had available, and say which income you used.

What a savings rate means

Cambridge Dictionary defines a personal savings rate as the percentage of the money people have available that they save rather than spend. The Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis explains the national version: the personal saving rate is personal saving divided by disposable personal income, and saving is income less outlays and taxes.

For a household it is a plain fraction. Saved this month, over income this month.

Take-home or gross?

The answer changes with the denominator. Dividing by take-home pay gives a bigger percent than dividing by gross pay, because take-home is the smaller number. Both are fine. What matters is to use the same one each time, and to say which.

Count what you actually move: transfers to savings, brokerage deposits, and any 401(k) contribution. A 401(k) comes out of pay before you see it, so it will not be in your bank statement. Add it from your pay stub.

A rate for two

A couple has one rate for each person, and one for the household. Adding both incomes and both savings gives the household figure. If one of you saves more than the other, the household rate can hide that.

Pay yourself first is one way to move the number: the transfer happens before you spend.

A worked example: $675 saved a month

  • Take-home for the month: $4,500. Gross for the month: $5,416.67.
  • Saved: $675 (transfers and deposits).
  • Savings rate on take-home: $675 / $4,500 = 15.0%.
  • Savings rate on gross pay: $675 / $5,416.67 = 12.5%.
  • Same savings, two honest numbers. Pick one and keep it.
