Take-home pay: what it means and what comes out of a paycheck

Take-home pay is what is left of your paycheck after taxes and deductions. What comes out of a paycheck, how to find yours, and how to budget on it.

Take-home pay is the amount of your earnings left after tax and other deductions have been taken away. It is the number that actually reaches your bank account.

What take-home pay means

Cambridge Dictionary defines take-home pay as the amount of earnings you have left after tax and other deductions are taken away. It is also called net pay. The difference between your gross pay and your take-home is what comes out.

A paycheck of $2,500 gross does not mean $2,500 in your account. In the example below, about $407 comes out of one paycheck.

What comes out of a paycheck

Federal income tax is figured from your Form W-4 and your pay. Social Security takes 6.2% of your pay up to $184,500 for 2026, and Medicare takes 1.45% with no cap (IRS Topic 751). Wages over $200,000 get an extra 0.9% Medicare tax withheld.

Then come the choices: health insurance, a 401(k), a flexible spending account. Many of these are taken out before income tax, so they shrink your tax as well as your check. State and local taxes come out too, where they apply.

Take-home pay and your budget

Plan with take-home pay. It is the real number for rent, food and saving. If your take-home changes with a raise or a new benefit, redo the plan the same week.

When a couple shares bills, each person's take-home is the fair base for a split. Gross can look very different from net once one of you puts a lot into a 401(k).

A worked example: one biweekly paycheck

  • Gross pay: $65,000 / 26 = $2,500.
  • Social Security: $2,500 x 6.2% = $155.00.
  • Medicare: $2,500 x 1.45% = $36.25.
  • Federal income tax: about $5,620 for the year on $65,000 single, which is $5,620 / 26 = about $216 a paycheck.
  • Take-home: $2,500 - $155.00 - $36.25 - $216 = about $2,093 before state tax.
