EveryDollar vs Goodbudget in 2026: free tiers, sync and sharing

EveryDollar and Goodbudget are the two budgeting apps people most often compare when they want to start free. Both have a free plan without bank sync and a Premium plan near $80 a year; the differences are in the free limits, how a partner joins and what happens to past months.

We make Wonderful, and it's on this list. Everything said about the other apps comes from their own pricing and help pages, the app stores and what their users say in public, each linked in the sources. Nobody paid to be listed, and we don't earn anything if you pick one of them.

The short version

Pick EveryDollar if you want a zero-based budget with unlimited categories and no device cap on the free plan, and you will type transactions yourself. Pick Goodbudget if you want envelopes and a partner who logs in with the household's one login. Premium costs almost the same, $79.99 against $80 a year, and bank sync is Premium only in both.

What a year costs
  • EveryDollar$79.99
  • Goodbudget$80
  • Wonderful$99

The yearly Premium plan on each page: Goodbudget $80, EveryDollar $79.99. Both free plans cost nothing but have no bank sync. Wonderful's $99 covers two people, has no free plan, and starts with a free week.

What each free plan gives you

This is the real difference between the two. EveryDollar's free version has a monthly budget, unlimited categories, split transactions, sinking funds, bill due dates and live-person support.[3][4] Goodbudget's free plan stops at 10 regular envelopes and 10 annual or goal envelopes, one account, two devices and one year of history. It does include debt tracking.[8][9]

So a single person with a simple budget can live on either. A couple with a car loan, rent, groceries, a few sinking funds and two cards will probably hit Goodbudget's 20 envelopes or one account before they hit anything in EveryDollar. One 2024 reviewer says Goodbudget is free "if you have 10 or less categories."[14]

Neither free plan connects to your bank, and you type every transaction in both. Goodbudget's pricing page lists automatic bank sync under Premium and EveryDollar's says bank import is Premium.[8][3]

EveryDollar vs Goodbudget price and trial

Paid yearly the two are one cent apart: EveryDollar Premium is $79.99 and Goodbudget Premium is $80. Paid monthly they split. Goodbudget is $10 a month, which is $120 over twelve months. EveryDollar is $17.99, which is $215.88. If you pay monthly, Goodbudget is $95.88 cheaper over a year.[8][9][3]

The App Store lists other EveryDollar plans, including Plus at $12.99 and Ramsey+ at $129.99 a year, that the plans page does not describe, so check what you are buying inside the app. For every EveryDollar price see EveryDollar pricing.[3][5]

Trial and refunds. Premium includes a 14-day free trial, for new users only.[3] Goodbudget's pricing page lists no trial, but its refund page says: "Within the first 30 days of your subscription, we're happy to give you a full refund." Partial refunds are not given after 30 days.[10] EveryDollar's plans page states no refund policy, so a Premium bought on the web or through Apple has no stated refund window to rely on.[3]

Zero-based or envelopes

Both ask you to decide where money goes before you spend it, in different shapes. EveryDollar is zero-based: you give every dollar of income a place until income minus planned spending is zero.[4] Goodbudget is envelope budgeting: you divide income into virtual envelopes, spend from the matching envelope and stop when it is empty.[15]

In practice, EveryDollar shows a monthly list of lines with planned and spent amounts. Goodbudget shows envelopes with a balance left in each, and its pages say transactions can be scheduled so envelopes fill automatically.[13] If you want to see "what is left in groceries" at a glance, envelopes read that way. If you want to be sure the plan adds up to your paycheck, zero-based reads that way. For a wider list in each style see envelope budgeting apps and zero-based budget apps.

Bank sync

Both put sync behind Premium, and both draw complaints about it. EveryDollar says it uses Mastercard Connect and Plaid.[3] Goodbudget's sync works with US banks only.[8]

Bank connections that drop or need reconnecting. Several 2026 reviews describe transactions arriving days late or needing a reconnect.[7] Sync problems: App Store reviewers in 2025 and 2026 report the app and web not syncing across devices, and paid accounts that would not link.[14] Reviews are one-person stories, not a measured rate, so treat a failed link as a reason to use the refund window on Goodbudget, or the 14-day trial on EveryDollar, before you commit a year.

EveryDollar vs Goodbudget for couples

Goodbudget shares one household. Its help article says your partner needs no separate invitation: they log in on their own device with "the same username / email address and password you created when you registered." It also warns that registering on both the phone and the web makes two separate households, so pick one.[1] The limit is devices: the free plan shares with two mobile devices and Premium with five, and logging in on the website does not count toward it.[2]

EveryDollar: A Household feature lets a couple manage one budget together, even when each partner signs in with a separate email. The page does not say whether it is free or Premium only.[3][4] Its pages describe one shared budget and do not say what each person sees.[3][4]

So Goodbudget gives two people one login and a device count; EveryDollar gives two people two logins and an unstated tier. Neither page describes hiding an account from a partner, or splitting a bill between two people by income. For the second, the fair split calculator does the arithmetic, and budgeting for couples covers how to set the money up.

Past months and the new monthly close

Both apps keep months separate, but one of them changed how in October 2026. At least eight of the 150 newest EveryDollar App Store reviews, dated October 28 to November 1, describe a monthly close that locks a past month. We could not find an EveryDollar page that describes it, because its help center did not load, so this is what reviewers report, not Ramsey's wording.

App Store review (1 star)· October 30, 2026
“The monthly close locks your budget and you cannot edit it. It also carries over leftover budget which is not how I handle my budget! I cancelled my subscription.”

Goodbudget's pages we read do not describe locking a month. If you fix last month's mistakes after the fact, try that in the trial or refund window of whichever you choose.

App Store review (3 stars)· October 2026
“Seems like a great application. 7 day trial was great. My only concern is $80.00 bucks year. To me, should be free in helping folks get out of debt. Not just 7 days.”

App Store review (2 stars)· July 2026
“Continually drops bank connections and no refund offered after 30 days. If you download, don’t shell out the $80 to link banks.”

Its 4.7 stars from 84K ratings rest on long-time users; the complaints are about paying for sync, dropped connections and, lately, locked months.[5][7]

Goodbudget

“This is simple, fast to make entries, and can sink with my wife. Plus free if you have 10 or less categories.”

Goodbudget holds 4.6 stars from 13,522 App Store ratings. The reviews we read praise the envelope system and complain about sync across devices, bank links that did not connect after paying, and setup.[13][14]

Choose EveryDollar or Goodbudget

Choose EveryDollar if you:

  • Want unlimited categories and no device cap while you type transactions
  • Follow Dave Ramsey's plan and want the zero-based method
  • Want a 14-day Premium trial before paying
  • Are fine with a past month being closed to edits

Choose Goodbudget if you:

  • Think in envelopes and can fit in 20 of them
  • Want a partner to share one login on their own phone
  • Want a 30-day full refund window on Premium
  • Would rather pay $10 a month than $17.99 for monthly sync

There is no overall winner. On the free plan EveryDollar has fewer limits. On a monthly bill Goodbudget costs less. On the yearly plan they cost the same. More apps in this style are in EveryDollar alternatives and Goodbudget alternatives.

A third option

We make Wonderful, so weigh this accordingly. It is neither zero-based nor envelope-based, and it is not free: a free week, then $14.99 a month or $99 a year for both of you. Every paycheck gets a plan for bills, spending and saving before it lands.[19] Each person connects their own bank and each person chooses, account by account, whether the other sees everything, only totals, or nothing.[18] It runs in the browser with no iPhone or Android app yet. If you want a free budget, stay with the two above, or see the best free budgeting apps.

Questions people ask

EveryDollar vs Goodbudget: which is better?

Neither wins for everyone. EveryDollar plans every dollar to zero and has unlimited categories free; Goodbudget fills envelopes and caps the free plan at 10 regular and 10 annual or goal envelopes, 1 account and 2 devices. Premium costs nearly the same, $79.99 against $80 a year, and both add bank sync only there.

Is Goodbudget or EveryDollar free?

Both have a free plan with no time limit, and in both you enter transactions by hand. Goodbudget's free plan is capped: 1 account, 2 devices, 20 envelopes in all and 1 year of history. EveryDollar's free version lists unlimited categories and no device or history cap on its plans page.

Does Goodbudget or EveryDollar sync with my bank?

Only on the paid plan in both. Goodbudget Premium syncs automatically with US banks. EveryDollar Premium imports transactions through Mastercard Connect and Plaid. Reviewers of each report connections that drop or fail to link.

How much do EveryDollar and Goodbudget cost?

EveryDollar Premium is $17.99 a month or $79.99 a year. Goodbudget Premium is $10 a month or $80 a year. By the month Goodbudget is $7.99 cheaper; by the year they are one cent apart.

Which is better for couples, EveryDollar or Goodbudget?

They share differently. Goodbudget's help article says your partner logs in with the same email and password you registered with, from their own device. EveryDollar's Household feature lets a couple manage one budget while each signs in with a separate email, but its plans page does not say whether that is free or Premium.

Does either app have a free trial?

EveryDollar Premium has a 14-day free trial for new users. Goodbudget's pricing page lists no trial, but its refund page offers a full refund within the first 30 days of a subscription.

What is the EveryDollar monthly close that reviewers complain about?

In late October 2026, App Store reviewers began describing a monthly close that locks a past month so it cannot be edited. We could not find an EveryDollar page that describes it, so this is what reviewers say, not Ramsey's wording. Goodbudget's pages we read do not describe a lock.

Is Goodbudget the same as EveryDollar?

No. Both are manual-first, but EveryDollar is zero-based: income minus planned spending equals zero. Goodbudget is envelope budgeting: you split income into envelopes, spend from the matching one and stop when it is empty.

Can I cancel and keep using the free plan?

On Goodbudget, cancelling keeps Premium until the paid period ends, then the household becomes a free household. EveryDollar's plans page says you can use the free version as long as you want, and purchases made through Apple or Google are cancelled through them.
