PayPal states a time. For customers without Direct Deposit 2-Day Early Access, its help page says you should receive your money no later than 8pm EST on your payment day. For customers who have early access, it can be up to 2 days sooner, depending on when PayPal gets instructions from your payer.

The 8pm EST line
PayPal's help page is unusual because it gives a deadline for payday. Customers without 2-Day Early Access should have the money by 8pm EST on payment day. The page says EST and doesn't say what applies in daylight time. It also doesn't say the money comes at 8pm. It is the latest, not a typical time.
PayPal adds that it does not get Direct Deposit instantly. There is some delay between the payer starting the payment and it arriving at PayPal. Its example is a deposit delayed for a few days around a federal or bank holiday.
Who has 2-Day Early Access
PayPal's help page says that some customers are eligible for Direct Deposit 2-Day Early Access and some aren't yet. For the second group it says it is working to enable the capability in the coming months. The page doesn't say how it decides who has it.
The marketing page says to get your paycheck up to 2 days early, with a footnote. Read the footnote on your own screen before counting on it, because the help page makes clear that not every customer has the feature.
Same day or two days ahead
PayPal says money transferred by direct deposit is generally available on the day the funds are applied to your account, and that can be 2 days in advance or the same day, depending on the type of funds coming in. So a paycheck, a government payment and a payroll-app payment may not behave alike.
You can split the deposit
PayPal's page says you can choose to deposit your entire check or enter the amount you want to go to your PayPal balance. The rest stays with your other account. That means two deposits for the employer to send, and two things to check on payday.
How to set up direct deposit with PayPal
- Identify your employer, government agency or payroll provider in the PayPal app.
- Verify your identity with the steps shown.
- Confirm the amount: your entire check or a set amount to your PayPal balance.
- PayPal says once processed, your Direct Deposit will begin within two pay cycles, and it notifies you each time money comes in.
Why your PayPal deposit might be late
- Your employer's cutoff to select your account information has not passed. PayPal says it can take up to 2 pay cycles.
- The payer started the payment late. PayPal says there is a delay between the payer starting it and its arrival.
- A federal or bank holiday. PayPal says a deposit may be delayed for a few days.
- The account or routing number your payer has is wrong.
If your PayPal deposit hasn't arrived
- If it is after 8pm EST on payday and you have no early access, contact the payer and check that the account and routing numbers are correct.
- Once they are confirmed, contact PayPal to investigate, as its help page says.
- Keep the payer's confirmation of the send date to share.
