What time does direct deposit hit?
What time does direct deposit hit? Most land by 9 a.m. local time on payday, and some banks post up to two days sooner. Here is the rule, the bank-by-bank facts and what to do if yours is late.
Checked October 27, 2026
Most direct deposits are available by 9 a.m. local time on payday. Nacha, which writes the ACH rules, says so for a Friday payday, and its rule sets 9:00 a.m. as the latest for most credits. Banks with early direct deposit post the money when they hear about it, up to two days before payday. That only happens when your employer sends the payment early. Of the 20 banks and apps below, 4 state a time of day.
This is general information, not financial or legal advice. Every bank fact below comes from the bank's own pages and was read on October 27, 2026. Where a bank states no time, we say it doesn't, and we do not guess.
How a direct deposit gets to you
Direct deposit runs on the ACH network. Nacha says your employer sends your bank details, your pay and your pay date to its own bank. That bank passes a batch to an ACH operator, which routes each entry to your bank. Nacha says there are two ACH operators, the Federal Reserve and The Clearing House. The Federal Reserve Board names payroll, Social Security and tax refunds as the typical examples of these credits.
So three parties decide your time. Your employer picks when to send. The operator settles on a schedule. Your bank decides when to show it. You control none of those, which is why the same bank can post your pay at different hours in different months.
When the Federal Reserve settles it
The Federal Reserve publishes its FedACH schedule. A payment dated for a future business day settles at 8:30 a.m. Eastern on that day. That is true for files sent by any of the evening deadlines shown. Payments sent for the same day settle later, at 1:00, 5:00 or 6:00 p.m. Eastern.
| Type of payment | File must be in by (ET) | Settles (ET) |
|---|---|---|
| Same day | 10:30 a.m. | 1:00 p.m. that day |
| Same day | 2:45 p.m. | 5:00 p.m. that day |
| Same day | 4:45 p.m. | 6:00 p.m. that day |
| Future dated | 10:30 a.m. | 8:30 a.m. on the future business day |
| Future dated | 2:45 p.m. | 8:30 a.m. on the future business day |
| Future dated | 4:45 p.m. | 8:30 a.m. on the future business day |
| Future dated | 8:00 p.m. (Sunday to Thursday) | 8:30 a.m. on the future business day |
Payroll is usually sent ahead with a set payday, which makes it a future dated payment. Those settle at 8:30 a.m. Eastern on that day. That fits Nacha's statement that Friday paydays are available by 9 a.m. The schedule covers settlement between banks. It says nothing about the hour your bank shows the money.
What the rules say about when the bank must release it
Nacha sets the floor. Its rule on faster funds availability says funds from non-Same Day ACH credits must be available for withdrawal by 9:00 a.m. in the receiving bank's local time on the settlement date. The condition is that the bank had the credit by 5:00 p.m. local time the day before. If it arrived after that, the funds must be available by the end of the settlement date.
For Same Day ACH credits, funds from the first processing window must be available by 1:30 p.m. local time and from the second by 5:00 p.m. local time. Nacha's faster funds rules took effect on September 20, 2019. They are minimums: a bank may release funds sooner.
The law adds a backstop. Regulation CC, at 12 CFR 229.10(b), says a bank must make funds from an electronic payment available no later than the business day after the banking day on which it received the payment. Nacha's rule is tighter for payroll. Banks can and do go sooner, as the table below shows.
Nacha also says that some banks and credit unions advance their own funds to the employee before settlement happens. That is early availability, and it is a choice the bank makes.
You may see a deposit marked pending. Nacha says one common reason is that your bank has received notice of the deposit but not yet the funds, which arrive on a specific date in the future.
Early direct deposit, explained
Early direct deposit is a bank posting your pay when it is told the money is coming, instead of when it settles. Current describes it as crediting the account as soon as it receives your employer's payroll information. SoFi says it makes the money available as soon as the Federal Reserve notifies it. Chase says banks do this by making funds available as soon as they receive information from a payer, rather than waiting for the funds to clear.
Three things follow. First, early means your employer sent the payment early, so ask payroll how far ahead it sends. Second, it is not guaranteed. Wells Fargo, PNC and TD say they may stop offering it at any time. Third, the bank can take it back. TD and PNC both say that if the payor reverses the deposit, they may debit the account, even if you spent the money.
Read the unit too. Wells Fargo, PNC, TD, Chase and Navy Federal say business days. Chime, Varo, Ally, USAA and Capital One say days. Two business days before a Monday payday is Thursday, because the weekend does not count.

The few that state a time
Only 4 of the 20 give any hour. They do not agree, because they answer different questions.
- Chime: its guide says deposits generally arrive by 9 a.m. local time on payday. Its help pages give no hour for an early one.
- SoFi: early direct deposit is usually available at the start of business on payday, or earlier, between midnight and 6 a.m.
- Citi: its guide says direct deposit is usually processed before 9 AM on your scheduled payday. It is a general article, not an account term.
- PayPal: for customers without 2-Day Early Access, no later than 8pm EST on payday. That is a deadline, not a typical hour.
OnePay names days, not an hour: it posts Monday through Friday, excluding federal holidays. For everyone else, Nacha's 9:00 a.m. rule is the only published floor.
Two banks without their own page
Some banks say too little to fill a page. Discover's direct deposit page now opens Capital One's early paycheck page for 360 Checking, so read the Capital One page and check your own Discover terms. U.S. Bank's direct deposit page describes setup and says a change can take one to two pay periods. Its Deposit Account Agreement, effective November 16, 2026, lists electronic direct deposits among deposits usually available for withdrawal immediately under normal circumstances. It describes no early pay.
Weekends and holidays
Chime says the ACH network does not process on non-business days, which are Monday through Friday excluding federal holidays. Nacha describes the common practice: a payday that would fall on a weekend or holiday is paid on the prior Friday. Several banks warn of the same delay. PayPal says a deposit may be delayed for a few days around a federal or bank holiday.
| Federal Reserve holiday | Day | Date |
|---|---|---|
| Veterans Day | Wednesday | November 11, 2026 |
| Thanksgiving Day | Thursday | November 26, 2026 |
| Christmas Day | Friday | December 25, 2026 |
| New Year's Day | Friday | January 1, 2027 |
| Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. | Monday | January 18, 2027 |
| Washington's Birthday | Monday | February 15, 2027 |
Two of those fall on a Friday: December 25, 2026 and January 1, 2027. Nacha's example is about a Friday before a holiday weekend. For a Friday that is itself a holiday, ask your employer which day it sends your pay. It will often be the Thursday, but your employer decides. Our 2026 biweekly payroll calendar lists the paydays, and you can compare them with the dates above.
Why a direct deposit is late
- Your employer sent it late. Chime and Cash App both list a payroll submitted after the cutoff, or with a wrong date.
- A wrong account or routing number. Chime says incorrect details can delay the deposit while the system tries to find your account.
- A name that doesn't match. Chime says the name on the account must match the name your payer has on file, or the deposit could be delayed or returned.
- A new setup. Wells Fargo, PNC, Ally, Capital One and Venmo say a new direct deposit can take one to two pay cycles to start.
- A holiday or weekend. See the table above.
- An ineligible deposit for early pay. Wells Fargo and TD say person-to-person payments such as Zelle, and check and mobile deposits, are not eligible. SoFi says non-recurring deposits such as IRS tax refunds are not.
What to do when it hasn't arrived
Go in this order. It saves time, and it is the order the banks give.
- Check pending items and alerts. Chase says your bank may show an anticipated deposit date as a pending transaction.
- Ask your employer. Ask the date and the amount it sent, and which account number it used. Nacha says it does not process ACH payments and has no access to individual ones. It says the best people to help are your bank or the organization that sent the payment.
- Ask for the ACH trace number. Chime says that if your payer confirms the deposit was sent, the trace number lets its support confirm receipt.
- Then call your bank. Give it the date and the amount. Cash App asks you to wait 5 business days from the send date. OnePay says to contact your payroll provider if it hasn't arrived within 2 business days.
If rent or a bill is due before the money arrives, call the biller before the due date and tell them your pay is delayed. A bank fee caused by a late deposit is sometimes refundable: see how to get overdraft fees refunded. Please don't take on a high cost loan to cover a few days. If you need help with rent or utilities, 211.org connects you to local help.
If your employer is not paying you on time at all, that is a wage question, not a bank one. The U.S. Department of Labor's State Payday Requirements page lists how often each state requires pay, and points to your state labor office for official information.
Plan around the date, not the hour
You cannot control the hour, so build your month around the date. If your bank posts early, treat that money as a bonus and pay bills on the regular payday. If it doesn't, count on 9 a.m. on payday as the likely time, not a promise.
Take a Friday payday as an example. A bank with early pay, such as Ally or TD, shows its own example of getting paid as soon as Wednesday. A bank without it shows the money on Friday, by the 9 a.m. rule Nacha describes. Either way, a bill due Thursday is not covered by the paycheck.
