SoFi's stated hours
SoFi's FAQ asks the question directly: what time does SoFi early direct deposit hit? Its answer is the start of business on payday, or earlier, between midnight and 6 a.m. That is a typical range, not a rule, and SoFi says the exact timing depends on your employer or payroll provider.
SoFi doesn't say which time zone applies. Its page also sets this against the two-days-early case. If your employer sends the payment file early, SoFi's help article says it makes the money available as soon as it is notified by the Federal Reserve.
Who qualifies
SoFi's rule for early direct deposit is $1,000 or more in direct deposits every 31 days. The deposits must be recurring. SoFi lists paychecks from an employer, payroll provider or benefits provider, and government disbursements such as Social Security, retirement or unemployment benefits.
It says non-recurring deposits, such as IRS tax refunds, are not eligible. That matters if you hope to use SoFi to see a refund early.
You can't turn it off
SoFi's help article says it has no opt-out for early paycheck. It made the feature so members could pay bills sooner, invest earlier and pay down loans faster. You can choose to leave the money alone until your normal payday.
SoFi also says you will not get your pay stub early. It says it has no control over when your payroll provider delivers pay stubs.
Interest starts on posting
SoFi says money earns interest as soon as it posts, and there is no minimum direct deposit amount to earn it. An early deposit therefore starts earning on the day it posts, not on payday.
How to set up direct deposit with SoFi
- Open a SoFi Checking and Savings account.
- Set up direct deposit from your employer. SoFi says most employers take a few weeks to set up a new direct deposit, so start early.
- Set up account alerts in Notification Settings in the SoFi mobile app. SoFi says that is how you get notified of a direct deposit.
Why your SoFi deposit might be late
- Your employer or payroll provider sent the payment on payday, not ahead of it.
- Your direct deposits total less than $1,000 every 31 days.
- The deposit is non-recurring, such as a tax refund.
- The direct deposit setup is new. SoFi says it can take a few weeks for an employer to start it.
If your SoFi deposit hasn't arrived
- Check your notifications and the account activity for the deposit.
- Chat with SoFi if you think there are issues. SoFi's page says to do so if your paycheck is not arriving early.
- Ask your employer for the date it sent the payment. SoFi says not everyone is paid two days early.
If a bill is due before the money lands, call the biller before the due date. If a fee hits your account because of a late deposit, see how to get overdraft fees refunded. This is general information, not financial advice.
