What USAA says about the 'why not early' question

USAA answers the late question in its own FAQ. The time you get your money depends on when your employer or payer sends a payment notification to USAA. Some do it on the same day every pay period. Others may not.

That second half matters. If your employer sends its notice a day before payday one cycle and on payday the next, your deposit will follow. USAA doesn't hold the money back. It acts on the notice.

Which payments USAA lists

USAA says direct deposit covers paychecks, which it describes as wages from an employer, payroll or the military. It also lists government benefits such as Social Security and disability, and pensions, meaning retirement and annuity payments.

For federal government payments it points to Go Direct. For active duty pay, it says to use myPay. If you don't know your myPay logon, you can use your Common Access Card to log on while on base or at work. Set up direct deposit there with your USAA Bank routing and account numbers.

Use your bank account number

For the options that don't use the automatic setup, USAA says you'll need your bank account number, not your USAA number. Your account number and routing number are in your account summary. It also offers a form builder: answer a few questions, and USAA creates a form you can send your employer.

Splitting a deposit

USAA says you can split your direct deposit into two accounts, but your employer has to set it up that way in its system. If the employer wants a form, you fill out one for each account you want paid. Two accounts mean two things to check on payday.

How to set up direct deposit with USAA

  1. On USAA's direct deposit page, choose Set up direct deposit.
  2. Find your payroll provider by searching for your employer or the company that pays you.
  3. Sign in to your payroll provider, then confirm the details and you are set.
  4. Or give your company your bank account number and routing number, or request a direct deposit form from USAA.

Why your USAA deposit might be late

  • Your employer sent its payment notification on payday, not ahead of it.
  • A holiday or bank closure delayed it.
  • Your employer has an old or wrong account number on file.

If your USAA deposit hasn't arrived

  1. Check your USAA alerts. USAA says it can send emails and text alerts if you have them turned on in your account settings.
  2. Review recent payments on USAA Home.
  3. Ask your employer when it sent the notice, then contact USAA.

If a bill is due before the money lands, call the biller before the due date. If a fee hits your account because of a late deposit, see how to get overdraft fees refunded. This is general information, not financial advice.
