Up to two, or one to two?
Wells Fargo's headline says up to two business days early. The footnote on the same pages words it as one to two business days before it receives the funds from the payor. Both describe a range, and neither promises the high end.
The count is in business days. That matters on a Monday payday. Two business days before Monday is Thursday, because the weekend is skipped. Add a Federal Reserve holiday and the dates shift again.
What is not eligible
Wells Fargo says eligible deposits are generally electronic payroll, pension and government benefit payments that move through the ACH network. It says most other credits are not eligible. Its examples are person-to-person payments such as Zelle, Venmo or PayPal transfers, check and mobile deposits, and instant payments over the RTP or FedNow networks.
Early Pay Day is also stated as available for personal accounts only. A business account owner should not expect it.
If Early Pay Day stops or skips a month
Wells Fargo's footnote says early funds are not guaranteed and that it may stop providing Early Pay Day at any time without advance notice. It also says the early availability can be limited by many factors, such as when it receives notice of payment from your payor.
The practical rule is to plan your bills around your pay date, and treat an early deposit as a bonus. If it doesn't come early one month, nothing is wrong.
How long setup takes
Wells Fargo says it may be one or two pay or benefit periods before direct deposit goes into effect. During that gap you may still get a paper check or a deposit to your old account. Your payor may also ask you to fill in its own form.
How to set up direct deposit with Wells Fargo
- Use the Wells Fargo Mobile app or sign on to create a customized Direct Deposit guide. Pick the account, and Wells Fargo pre-fills your routing number, account number and account type.
- Give the completed form to the company or agency that pays you. Your payor may ask for its own form.
- Watch your account. Set up alerts by email, text or push notification to be told when a direct deposit is available.
Why your Wells Fargo deposit might be late
- Your payor sent its notice on payday, so there was nothing to make available early.
- The deposit type is not eligible, such as a Zelle or Venmo transfer or a mobile check.
- Direct deposit had not yet taken effect. Wells Fargo says that can take one or two pay periods.
- It is a business account. Early Pay Day is stated for personal accounts only.
