An estimate for 2026: the year's income tax spread evenly over your paychecks, using the standard deduction. Your employer uses the IRS withholding tables and your W-4, so a real paycheck can be a little different. Credits (like the child tax credit), other income and local taxes aren't included.
How California taxes a paycheck
California hadn't published its 2026 figures when we checked, so the state part uses its 2025 figures. Federal figures are for 2026.
- California has nine rates from 1% to 12.3%, plus a 1% Behavioral Health Services Tax on taxable income over $1 million, which the brackets here include.
- The 2025 standard deduction is $5,706 for a single filer and $11,412 for joint and head of household filers, lower than the federal amount.
- Instead of a personal exemption deduction, California gives a $153 exemption credit per person ($306 for a joint return), which phases down by $6 per exemption for each $2,500 of federal adjusted gross income over $252,203 (single), $378,310 (head of household) or $504,411 (joint). The calculator reduces it in a straight line, which is within $12 of the worksheet and is gone about $65,000 over the limit.
- State Disability Insurance is taken from wages at 1.3% for 2026, with no wage cap since 2024.
- Figures are the 2025 tax year, the latest California has published; its 2026 withholding schedules use the same standard deduction.
California has 10 tax brackets, from 1% up to 13.3%. A single filer gets a standard deduction of $5,706. There is also a credit of $153 off the tax. Traditional 401(k) contributions come out of California taxable pay.
