An estimate for 2026: the year's income tax spread evenly over your paychecks, using the standard deduction. Your employer uses the IRS withholding tables and your W-4, so a real paycheck can be a little different. Credits (like the child tax credit), other income and local taxes aren't included.
How Illinois taxes a paycheck
- Illinois taxes income at one flat rate of 4.95%.
- Instead each person gets an exemption allowance, $2,925 each for 2026 (up from $2,850 in 2025). A married couple filing jointly gets two.
- The exemption allowance is not allowed when federal adjusted gross income is over $250,000, or over $500,000 for a married couple filing jointly. The calculator drops the exemption just above those incomes, so pay right at the limit can be off by about $145 ($290 for joint filers) of tax for a few dollars of income.
- Employers withhold by subtracting the exemption allowances from wages and multiplying the rest by 4.95%.
Illinois has a flat income tax of 4.95%. There is no standard deduction. A single filer gets a personal exemption of $2,925. Traditional 401(k) contributions come out of Illinois taxable pay.
