An estimate for 2026: the year's income tax spread evenly over your paychecks, using the standard deduction. Your employer uses the IRS withholding tables and your W-4, so a real paycheck can be a little different. Credits (like the child tax credit), other income and local taxes aren't included.

How Massachusetts taxes a paycheck

  • Massachusetts taxes wages at a flat 5 percent. A 4 percent surtax applies to taxable income over $1,107,750 in 2026, which makes the top rate 9 percent.
  • There is no standard deduction. The personal exemption is $4,400 for single filers, $6,800 for heads of household and $8,800 for joint filers.
  • Pre-tax 401(k) deferrals follow the federal rule and are left out of Massachusetts wages.
  • Paid Family and Medical Leave is 0.88 percent of wages up to the Social Security wage base for employers with 25 or more workers. Employers can take all of the 0.18 percent family share and up to 0.28 percent of the 0.70 percent medical share from pay, so employees pay up to 0.46 percent. Smaller employers may take the full 0.46 percent.
  • The calculator leaves out the extra exemptions Massachusetts allows for age 65 or over, blindness, dependents and medical expenses.

Massachusetts has 2 tax brackets, from 5% up to 9%. There is no standard deduction. A single filer gets a personal exemption of $4,400. Traditional 401(k) contributions come out of Massachusetts taxable pay.
