Net monthly income is what you have left in a month after tax and other deductions. It is your take-home pay, added up and averaged by the month.
What net monthly income means
Cambridge Dictionary defines net income as income after all tax and other costs have been paid. Net monthly income is that figure for one month. It is the money you can actually put toward rent, food and everything else.
If you are paid monthly, it is the net pay on your stub. Otherwise you have to average, because some months hold more paychecks than others.
How to find it
Take the net pay on one paycheck and multiply by the number of paychecks in a year: 26 if every two weeks, 24 if twice a month, 52 if weekly. Divide by 12.
Check it against your bank account. A few months of deposits, added up and divided by the months, should be close. If it is far off, something is being taken out that your math left out, like an insurance premium or a 401(k).
Why average it
A biweekly worker gets 26 paychecks, so two months hold three. If you budget each month on the checks that land in it, those two months look rich and the others look tight. Budgeting on the average keeps the plan the same every month, and the extra check can go toward a goal.
For two people, add your net monthly incomes. That total is what you have to cover shared bills and personal money together. Our guide to three-paycheck months shows how to use the extra checks.
A worked example: a biweekly paycheck
- Net pay per paycheck: about $2,093 ($65,000 a year, single, before state tax; our paycheck calculator).
- Paychecks a year: 26.
- Net for the year: $2,093 x 26 = $54,418.
- Net monthly income on average: $54,418 / 12 = about $4,535.
- A normal month with two checks lands: $2,093 x 2 = $4,186, which is $349 under the average.
- A three-check month lands $6,279, which is $1,744 over the average.
