The short version
YNAB (You Need A Budget) costs $14.99 a month or $109 a year, plus tax where applicable, and has no free plan. Its website offers a 34-day free trial with no card needed; the App Store listing says 30 days. College students get a free 365-day trial, and one subscription can cover up to six people through YNAB Together.[2][5]

YNAB plans and prices
YNAB sells one product in two ways. The pricing page, read October 27, 2026, shows $14.99 a month and $109 paid annually, which it presents as $9.08 a month, with a footnote that tax is added where applicable.[2] The App Store lists the same $14.99 and $109.00.[5] Unlike some apps, there are no tiers to choose between: everyone gets the same features.
| Plan | Monthly | Yearly | A month, paid yearly | What it is |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly[2][5] | $14.99 | — | — | Plus tax where applicable. The App Store lists a $14.99 subscription too. |
| Annual[2][5] | — | $109 | $9.08 | Paid annually; the page shows it as $9.08 a month and says it saves $70 against paying monthly. The App Store lists $109.00. |
The pricing page says paying yearly saves $70 against paying monthly.[2] That matches the arithmetic: twelve months at $14.99 is $179.88, and $179.88 minus $109 is $70.88. If you finish the trial and want to keep going, yearly is the cheaper way to pay.
We found no price history on YNAB's own pages, so we don't say what it cost in earlier years. One App Store reviewer from June 2026 mentions "Upped fees," which tells you someone noticed, not by how much.[7]
The free trial: 34 days or 30?
The pricing page says a 34-day free trial, no card needed when you sign up directly with YNAB. An app store sign-up may ask for card details. The App Store listing says a 30-day trial, not 34.[2][5]
We can't say why they differ. The pricing page, on YNAB's own site, says "Try YNAB for 34 days (for free!)" and "No credit card required."[2] The App Store listing says 30 days.[5] The safest reading is that the website offer is 34 days with no card, and that an offer started in an app store may differ. If the length or the card matters to you, start the trial on YNAB's site and read the screen before you confirm.
The college student year
College students get a free 365-day trial through the College Program, with proof of enrollment such as a student ID, transcript or tuition statement.[2] It is the only discount YNAB's pricing page lists. It is a free trial of a year, not a reduced price on a paid plan, and the page doesn't say what happens when the year ends. We found no promo code, military discount or coupon on the pricing page, so we don't list any.
YNAB Together
The pricing page says one subscription can be shared with up to 5 more people, six in all, at no extra cost.[2] YNAB's Together terms add the rules: it is for "partners, families, and other close-knit groups of up to six people," each member gets their own login, and it is "all for the price of a single subscription."[1] Members must be over 13 in the United States, or over 16 elsewhere.[1]
The person who invites the others becomes the Group Manager. The manager invites and removes members and is responsible for billing. The terms also say the manager can see each member's account details, including all budgets the member owns or has access to, their first name and email address, and that "all budgets are always shared with the Group Manager." Members choose whether to share budgets with the rest of the group.[1] So if you share with a partner, one of you is the manager and sees the other's budgets.
What YNAB costs for two people
Nothing extra. A couple on YNAB Together pays for one subscription, $109 a year or $14.99 a month, and each has a login.[2][1] YNAB Together shares one subscription with up to six people, "for the price of a single subscription." It is meant for partners and other close groups.[2][3][8]
What the pages don't say: whether two people can keep separate budgets inside the group beyond the choice to share, and whether a shared expense can be split between them. [5][8] If you want those, see the best budgeting apps for couples and budgeting for couples.
Refunds and cancelling
We found no refund policy on the pricing page. It links to a cancellation page in its footer, but the page text we read had no refund terms.[2] Ask YNAB's support before you rely on a refund, and cancel before the trial ends if you don't want to be charged. Because the website trial needs no card, you can let it run out without being billed when you sign up directly.[2] That is the main advantage of starting on the site.
One October 2026 App Store reviewer calls deleting the subscription a hassle.[7] That is a single view, not a rate.
YNAB compared with other apps
- EveryDollar$79.99
- Goodbudget$80
- Copilot Money$95
- Wonderful$99
- Monarch Money$99.99
- Lunch Money$100
- YNAB (You Need A Budget)$109
The cheapest way to pay for a year on each app's own pricing page. YNAB is shown at $109 billed annually. EveryDollar and Goodbudget also have a free version with limits; the chart shows their paid price. Copilot's cheapest is its App Store yearly price.
YNAB is the highest on this chart by a small amount. The apps cluster between $80 and $109 a year. That makes price a weak reason to choose among them, and method the strong one: YNAB asks you to plan each dollar before you spend it, which the company's method page presents as the whole point.[4] For a head to head see Monarch vs YNAB, YNAB vs EveryDollar and Monarch pricing.
Is YNAB worth it?
It is worth it if
- You want a method, not just a tracker, and will spend time on it.[4]
- You will budget with a partner or family and want one subscription for up to six.[2]
- You want debt help: it includes a Loan Planner that shows the interest and time saved for each extra dollar.[3][5]
- You like the ratings: 4.8 on the App Store from 62K ratings, 4.6 on Google Play from 25.4K.[5][6]
“Budgeting works if you want to change your life. In 10 years of using YNAB we went from being a total of $250,000 in debt to $950,000 in net worth. It takes time and commitment to change.”Read it where it was said ↗
It is less likely to be if
- You want a free plan. There is none after the trial.[2]
- You want a budget that runs without your attention. The method asks you to plan every dollar.[4]
- Bank sync matters most. Reviews from June to October 2026 describe delays of 12 to 24 hours and weeks without account data.[7]
“I really like YNAB but I think it’s too expensive.”Read it where it was said ↗
“This app used to be great for tracking spending and making a budget but it now takes 12-24 hours to sync transactions.”Read it where it was said ↗
A fair test is the trial. Spend 34 days on it, with real paychecks and real bills. If you are still opening it in week four, the $109 is likely to be money well used. If not, see YNAB alternatives.
Alternatives in short form

- EveryDollar: Free, or $17.99/mo or $79.99/yr. A zero-based budget with a free version where you enter transactions yourself.
- Goodbudget: Free, or $10/mo or $80/yr. Envelope budgeting for a household with a free plan.
- Lunch Money: $10/mo or $100/yr. A web-first app with rules and tags.

- Wonderful: $14.99/mo or $99/yr for both partners.
The longer list is on YNAB alternatives.
Where Wonderful fits
We make Wonderful, so weigh this accordingly. If what drew you to YNAB is planning every dollar, Wonderful does something related: every paycheck gets a plan for bills, spending and saving before it lands. But it is not the same method as YNAB's.
It is $14.99 a month or $99 a year for both partners, where each person connects their own bank and chooses what the other sees. Shared costs are split evenly, by income or any way you choose, with a running total of who owes whom. It has no free plan after a free week, runs in the browser with no iPhone or Android app yet, and gives no investment advice. If you want YNAB's method, a group of up to six or an app-store app, YNAB is the closer fit.
Questions people ask
How much does YNAB cost?
YNAB costs $14.99 a month or $109 a year, plus tax where applicable. The yearly plan works out to $9.08 a month, which the pricing page says saves $70 against paying monthly.
Is YNAB free?
No. There is no free plan. The only free access is the trial, and a free 365-day trial for college students.
Does YNAB have a free trial?
Yes. The pricing page says 34 days free with no credit card required when you sign up with YNAB directly. The App Store listing says 30 days. A sign-up through an app store may ask for card details.
Why does YNAB say 34 days in one place and 30 in another?
We don't know. The website's pricing page says 34 days and the App Store listing says a 30-day trial, and we found no explanation on either. If the length matters to you, look at the screen where you start the trial.
Is there a YNAB student discount?
Yes, in the form of a free year. YNAB offers all college students a free 365-day trial through its College Program, with proof of enrollment such as a student ID, transcript or tuition statement. It is a trial, not a discount on a paid plan.
Can I share YNAB with my partner?
Yes. YNAB Together lets one subscription cover up to six people, each with their own login, for the price of a single subscription. The person who manages the group is responsible for billing.
Does YNAB offer a refund?
We couldn't find refund wording on the pricing page. It links to a cancellation page, but the page text we read has no refund terms. Ask YNAB's support before you rely on one.
Is YNAB worth it?
It is worth it if you will use the method of giving every dollar a job and want to share it with a partner or family. It is less likely to be if you want something you set up once and leave, since the method asks for your time. Some reviewers call the price too high or describe slow bank syncing.
Is monthly or yearly cheaper?
Yearly. $109 a year is $9.08 a month. Monthly is $14.99, or $179.88 over twelve months. Use the trial to decide before you pick.
