An estimate for 2026: the year's income tax spread evenly over your paychecks, using the standard deduction. Your employer uses the IRS withholding tables and your W-4, so a real paycheck can be a little different. Credits (like the child tax credit), other income and local taxes aren't included.
How Utah taxes a paycheck
- Utah taxes income at one flat rate. The 2026 return multiplies Utah taxable income, which starts from federal adjusted gross income, by 4.45%.
- Instead of a deduction, Utah gives a taxpayer tax credit. It is 6% of the federal standard deduction plus $2,167 for each qualifying dependent, reduced by 1.3% of income over $18,696 for a single filer ($28,045 for head of household, $37,392 for joint filers).
- The full credit with no dependents is $966 for a single filer, $1,932 for joint filers and $1,449 for a head of household, and the calculator takes 1.3 cents off it for each dollar of income over those limits, so it is gone at about $93,000 (single), $186,000 (joint) and $139,500 (head of household).
- A traditional 401(k) deferral is left out of Utah income, because the return starts from federal adjusted gross income.
- These figures come from the Tax Commission's draft 2026 TC-40, dated October 20, 2026, so they may change when the final form is published.
Utah has a flat income tax of 4.45%. There is also a credit of $966 off the tax. Traditional 401(k) contributions come out of Utah taxable pay.

What else comes out of a Utah paycheck
Beyond federal tax, Social Security, Medicare and Utah income tax, the calculator takes nothing else out of a Utah paycheck, other than what you choose, like a 401(k) or health insurance.
How often Utah employers pay
Utah's Payment of Wages Act (Utah Code 34-28-3) says wages are paid at regular intervals, in periods no longer than semimonthly, on days the employer sets in advance. Pay for a period is due within 10 days after it closes. If payday lands on a weekend or holiday, pay comes the day before. An employee on a yearly salary can be paid monthly, on or before the seventh of the month after the work.
