An estimate for 2026: the year's income tax spread evenly over your paychecks, using the standard deduction. Your employer uses the IRS withholding tables and your W-4, so a real paycheck can be a little different. Credits (like the child tax credit), other income and local taxes aren't included.

How Virginia taxes a paycheck

  • Virginia uses one set of brackets for everyone: 2% on the first $3,000 of taxable income, 3% to $5,000, 5% to $17,000 and 5.75% above that.
  • The 2026 standard deduction is $8,750 for a single filer and $17,500 for married couples filing jointly. Each person also gets a $930 personal exemption.
  • The standard deduction table lists single and joint amounts only, so the calculator uses the single amount for heads of household.
  • A traditional 401(k) deferral is left out of Virginia income, because the return starts from federal adjusted gross income.
  • The 2026 Appropriation Act raises the standard deduction to $9,200 single and $18,400 joint starting in 2027.

Virginia has 4 tax brackets, from 2% up to 5.75%. A single filer gets a standard deduction of $8,750 and a personal exemption of $930. Traditional 401(k) contributions come out of Virginia taxable pay.
