Pay schedule

Does the military pay weekly or biweekly?

Neither. The Army and Air Force say basic pay goes out on the 1st and 15th of every month, and DFAS lists the 2026 dates. Here is what they say.

Checked October 22, 2026

Neither one. The Army and the Air Force both say basic pay "is electronically distributed on the 1st and 15th of every month." That is twice a month, 24 paychecks a year, not every week or every two weeks.

What the US military says

These are the employer's own words, from its own pages. We only list an employer when its pages say how often it pays.

  • "Basic Pay is electronically distributed on the 1st and 15th of every month, similar to many civilian jobs." (Army Benefits, Basic Pay)
  • The Air Force benefits page for Basic Pay uses the same sentence. (Air Force Benefits, Basic Pay)
  • DFAS lists a mid-month payday and an end-of-month payday for every month of 2026. The dates move around weekends: February's are Feb. 13 and Feb. 27, October's are Oct. 15 and Oct. 30, and March's end-of-month payday is April 1. (DFAS, 2026 Active Duty Paydays (updated August 25, 2026))

Where it can differ

  • Those pages are about basic pay for active duty service members. They do not cover retired pay, reserve pay or civilians who work for the military.
  • The DFAS table shows the dates moving when the 1st or 15th does not fall on a business day, and an end-of-month payday can land on the 1st of the next month.

What this means for budgeting

Whoever pays you, the schedule changes how a budget feels. A weekly pay schedule means 52 paychecks a year, so some months have 5 paydays. A biweekly one means 26, which makes two months a year with 3 paychecks. Twice a month (semimonthly) means 24, always on the same two dates. The yearly total is the same either way. Only the timing moves.

Bills tend to come once a month, so it helps to plan from the smaller months and treat the extra paycheck as a bonus. The 2026 biweekly payroll calendar shows which months have 3 paychecks, and biweekly vs semimonthly explains why the two feel different. Questions people ask

Does the military pay weekly or biweekly?

Neither. The Army and Air Force say basic pay goes out on the 1st and 15th of every month.

How is that different from biweekly?

Biweekly means every 14 days, 26 checks a year, and the date moves. The 1st and 15th are the same dates each month, 24 checks a year. The guide to biweekly vs semimonthly pay explains the difference.

Does the military pay the same on the 1st and 15th?

The pages say pay is distributed on those two dates. They do not say whether the two checks are equal.

Is the payday exactly the 1st and the 15th?

Often, but not always. DFAS's 2026 table has mid-month paydays such as Feb. 13 and Aug. 14, and end-of-month paydays such as Apr. 1 and Sep. 1.
