How to cancel GitHub Copilot

How to cancel a personal GitHub Copilot Pro or Pro+ plan from your GitHub billing settings, from GitHub's docs, and who can't cancel it themselves.

Checked October 22, 2026

Open GitHub Settings, then Billing & licensing, and use Manage subscription in the GitHub Copilot section to cancel. You keep your current features until the billing cycle ends, and then your account moves to Copilot Free.

Cancel GitHub Copilot on GitHub.com

  1. Click your profile picture in the upper-right corner of GitHub, then click Settings.
  2. In the Access section of the sidebar, click Billing & licensing, then Licensing. On the original billing platform, click Billing and licensing, then Plans and usage.
  3. In the GitHub Copilot section, open the Manage subscription dropdown and click Cancel subscription.
  4. Select Cancel for your plan (Copilot Pro, Pro+ or Max) to cancel at the end of your current billing cycle.

These steps are for a plan you pay for yourself. An organization or enterprise plan is handled by its admin.

Before you cancel GitHub Copilot

  • You keep your current features until the billing cycle ends. After that, GitHub moves your account to Copilot Free.
  • You can't cancel if your access is free as a verified student, teacher or maintainer of a popular open source project.
  • You can't cancel if your access comes from an organization or enterprise. You can turn Copilot off in your own environment instead, and an admin removes the seat.
  • If you have a personal Pro, Pro+ or Max plan and are then given a seat in Copilot Business or Enterprise, GitHub cancels the personal plan automatically.
  • GitHub's cancel article doesn't cover free trials or refunds. For those, check GitHub's billing documentation or contact GitHub Support.
  • If you can't sign in to the account that is being billed, use GitHub's account recovery. If that fails, contact GitHub Support to stop the charges.

After you cancel

Keep the confirmation email or screenshot. Then watch your bank or card for the next billing date: if GitHub Copilot charges you again after you cancelled, ask GitHub Copilot for a refund first, and if that fails, dispute the charge with your card. The guide to disputing a charge has the steps and the deadlines.
