- Goodbudget$80

Goodbudget Premium $80 and YNAB $109, the yearly plans. Goodbudget's free plan costs nothing but has no bank sync. Wonderful's $99 covers two people and starts with a free week.
Goodbudget vs YNAB price, free plan and trial
Goodbudget is the cheaper app and the only one with a free plan. Paid yearly, Premium is $80 and YNAB is $109, a $29 gap. Paid monthly, Goodbudget is $10, or $120 over twelve months, and YNAB is $14.99, or $179.88.[3][4][12]
The free plan. A free plan exists. It has no bank sync, one account, 20 envelopes in all (10 regular and 10 annual or goal), two devices and a year of history. The App Store listing calls it ad-free.[3][4][8] YNAB has no free plan; No free plan. The only free access is the trial, and the college program below.[12]
Trial and refunds. The pricing page says a 34-day free trial, no card needed when you sign up directly with YNAB. An app store sign-up may ask for card details. The App Store listing says a 30-day trial, not 34.[12][15] Goodbudget's pricing page lists no trial, but its refund page says: "Within the first 30 days of your subscription, we're happy to give you a full refund."[5] YNAB's pricing page does not state a refund policy.[12] For more on YNAB's plans see YNAB pricing.
How budgeting works
Goodbudget: Envelope budgeting: you divide income into category envelopes, spend from the matching envelope and stop when it is empty, with no physical cash.[10] Transactions can be scheduled so envelopes fill automatically.[8]
YNAB: The method: for every dollar, ask "What's it for?" Plan for now (before the next paycheck), for later (non-monthly bills like car repairs), and for ease (get a month ahead).[14] Targets: set spending and savings goals per category and track progress at a glance.[13] Loan Planner: shows how much interest and time you save for each extra dollar paid toward debt.[13][15]
Debt is the sharp difference. Goodbudget lists debt tracking on both of its plans.[3] YNAB adds a Loan Planner that shows the interest and time saved by each extra dollar. Reviewers also treat the two differently on effort: one 2026 Goodbudget reviewer calls the app complex, and YNAB's own method asks you to learn its steps. For a wider list in each style see envelope budgeting apps and zero-based budget apps.
Bank sync
YNAB links accounts and brings in transactions automatically.[13] Goodbudget has automatic sync only on Premium, with US banks only; the free plan is manual entry.[3][4]
Sync problems: App Store reviewers in 2025 and 2026 report the app and web not syncing across devices, and paid accounts that would not link.[9] YNAB reviewers describe the same trouble in 2026, from a 12 to 24 hour sync to banks it no longer connects to.[17]
Goodbudget vs YNAB for couples
Goodbudget shares a household. Its help article says your partner needs no separate invitation: they log in on their own device with "the same username / email address and password you created when you registered." The limit is devices: two mobile devices free and five on Premium, with website logins not counted.[1][2]
YNAB: YNAB Together shares one subscription with up to six people, "for the price of a single subscription." It is meant for partners and other close groups.[12][13][18] YNAB's pages don't say what each member sees. Its partner article says members can create and share budgets with each other under one subscription.[18]
On cost for two, Goodbudget Premium is $80 and YNAB is $109, each for the whole household or group. Neither page describes hiding an account from a partner, or splitting a bill by income. The fair split calculator does the second, and budgeting for couples covers setups.

A third option
We make Wonderful, so weigh this accordingly. It is not free and not envelope-based: a free week, then $14.99 a month or $99 a year for both of you. Every paycheck gets a plan for bills, spending and saving before it lands.[22] Each person chooses, account by account, whether the other sees everything, only totals, or nothing.[21] It runs in the browser with no iPhone or Android app yet. If you want a free plan or a Loan Planner, use Goodbudget or YNAB.
