How we compared

Because Quicken is two products, the useful question is which Quicken product you are really weighing. We looked at what changes the bill or the work later: price and trial, how the budget is built, what each does with investments, how a partner joins, where it runs and how well it stays connected. We read Monarch's pricing, budgeting and couples pages, Quicken's pricing and product pages and help articles, and the app stores. Every fact is numbered to its source at the end.

Price and trial

Monarch lists $14.99 a month or $99.99 billed yearly. Paying monthly for a year comes to $179.88, so the yearly plan saves $79.89.[1] The pricing page says "Your first week is on us." The App Store says the app is free to try for 7 days before a monthly or annual membership is billed. Neither says whether a card is needed.[1][2] The App Store also shows a Plus plan at $199.99 a year, and Monarch's pricing page says Plus adds forecasting tools, tracking several income sources and deeper investment tracking.[1][2]

Quicken is cheaper to start. Simplifi is $3.99 a month billed annually; Classic is $4.49 for Starter, $6.99 for Deluxe and $7.99 for Premier, also billed annually. The discount is for the first year of new memberships ordered directly from Quicken; the pages' offer ends November 29, 2026 (11:59 PT).[22] "While we do not offer a free trial" there is a 30-day money-back guarantee from the original purchase date, for purchases made directly on Quicken.com.[16]

In dollars, the first year is about $48 for Simplifi and $84 for Classic Deluxe against $99.99 for Monarch. After that Quicken's renewal price is not on its pages. For more on each, see Monarch pricing in 2026 and Simplifi pricing in 2026.

How budgeting works

Monarch offers two styles. Two ways to budget: Flex, which splits spending into fixed, flexible and non-monthly buckets and gives one main number to watch, or Category budgeting.[2][7] Rollovers: money left in a category carries into the next month, to cover bills that do not come every month.[7]

Simplifi starts from income and bills and shows what is left to spend each day.[12] Projected cash flow with "what-if" scenarios.[12]

Classic is traditional and category-based. Budgets: a simple monthly budget on Starter, multiple budgets on Deluxe.[20][21]

If you want a choice of styles and rollovers for non-monthly bills, Monarch is closer. If you want one daily number, Simplifi is. If you want several budgets at once, Classic Deluxe is.

Investments and net worth

Tracks net worth across all connected accounts.[2][4] Deeper investment tracking sits in Monarch's Plus tier.[1][2]

Quicken goes further here. Investment tracking with cost basis, performance analysis and real-time quotes.[12] Investing tools on Deluxe and Premier; Premier calculates IRR and ROI and analyzes buys and sells.[21][22] Built-in tax reports with export to TurboTax on Premier.[22]

If the investment side matters, that is the case for Quicken. If you mostly want to see your total net worth moving, Monarch covers it.

Couples and sharing

  • Monarch: A partner joins at no extra cost under the same subscription and gets their own login. The page says, "Partners will each have their own login, but can view each other's data."[5][6] Both partners see everything. The page says, "both parties will have full visibility into all accounts and transactions associated with it," and tells people to check they are comfortable with that first. The help center adds: "You cannot hide bank accounts or transactions in Monarch."[5][6][10]
  • Simplifi: Spaces sharing: you can share your data with one additional member. They need their own Quicken ID but not their own subscription, and must accept the invite on the web app.[12][14] Sharing is full access to the one shared space. Sharing specific accounts or features is not available yet, and the article says it "may be added" in the future. You can remove a member at any time.[14]
  • Classic: Quicken's subscription FAQ says Quicken "is currently designed for one user". A spouse or partner can be given access through Data Sharing in Quicken on the Web: they sign in with their own Quicken ID, need no subscription of their own, and see only the data file you share. It works only for a data file synced to the cloud, and it does not give them the desktop app.[26][27]

Monarch and Simplifi are alike here: no second subscription, and the partner sees everything. Neither page describes splitting a bill. One Monarch reviewer in August 2026 could not get a spouse's membership to work with the account already started, so test the invite on day one.[9] For the Quicken side, see Simplifi and Quicken for couples.

Platforms and bank connections

Monarch and Simplifi both run on the web, iPhone and Android. Classic is installed software for Windows and Mac, with a companion phone app, and keeps data local.[23] "Certain features not supported on mobile apps."[12]

On connections, Connects bank accounts, credit cards, loans, investment accounts and real estate, through 13,000+ financial institutions.[4] Automatically categorizes transactions and connects to over 14,000 financial institutions.[12] Reviewers of all three report drops in 2026. Connections that drop. App Store reviewers describe accounts that "disconnect all the time" and a bank that stayed broken for a month.[9] Sync: App Store reviewers in 2026 report cloud sync and bank sync failing, and categories changing after syncing to mobile.[25]

Monarch's pricing page recommends signing up on the web rather than through the Apple or Google stores, and Quicken's refund guarantee applies to direct purchases, so buy on the web either way.[1]

These are 2026 App Store and Trustpilot comments. Reviews skew toward people with a problem or a strong feeling, so read them as examples, not a vote. Simplifi's App Store listing is Quicken's general app, so a few comments may be about other Quicken plans.

A third option

We make Wonderful, so weigh this as you would any maker's note. Each person chooses, account by account, whether the other sees everything, only totals, or nothing.[30] The difference from Monarch and Simplifi is that sharing is per account instead of all or nothing, and shared costs split evenly, by income, or any way you choose, and it keeps a running total of who owes whom.[31] It costs $14.99 a month or $99 a year for both of you, with a free week first and no free plan after. It has no iPhone or Android app yet, gives no investment advice and is not desktop software, so for investing tools or a desktop program pick Quicken.
