What a year costs
  • Simplifi (first year)$47.88
  • Wonderful$99
  • YNAB (You Need A Budget)$109

YNAB's annual plan, Simplifi's $3.99 a month first-year offer times twelve (Quicken says the final price may differ, and renewal is at the then-current rate), and Wonderful's yearly plan, which covers two people. Before tax, from each app's own pricing page.

How we compared

Both apps link your accounts and sort transactions, so the differences are in what you pay, how you are asked to budget and who else can join. We looked at five things:

  • Price and trial. What the first year costs, what comes after, and whether you can try it before you pay.
  • How budgeting works. What the app asks of you each week and what it shows back.
  • Couples. Who else can join, at what cost.
  • Platforms and bank connections. Where it runs and how reviewers say it stays connected.
  • What people say. Public App Store reviews from 2026.

We read YNAB's pricing, features, method and partner pages, Quicken's Simplifi product page and help articles, and the app stores, and re-read both prices on November 3, 2026. Simplifi's iPhone app is listed as Quicken's general app, shared with other Quicken products, so we show no App Store rating for it. Every fact is numbered to its source at the end.

Simplifi vs YNAB price and trial

YNAB: $14.99 a month or $109 billed annually.[8][11] Paying monthly for a year comes to $179.88, so the annual plan saves $70.88.[8] The pricing page says a 34-day free trial, no card needed when you sign up directly with YNAB. An app store sign-up may ask for card details. The App Store listing says a 30-day trial, not 34.[8][11]

Simplifi: Quicken's product page shows $3.99 a month billed annually, with $6.99 beside it. The page says the offer is for the first year when ordered directly from Quicken by November 29, 2026, and it does not label the $6.99.[1] Only annual plans are offered, and renewals are charged at the full standard price.[5] So the honest first-year comparison is about $48 for Simplifi against $109 for YNAB, and the second year is a question mark until you see the renewal price.

Trial. "While we do not offer a free trial" there is a 30-day money-back guarantee from the original purchase date, for purchases made directly on Quicken.com.[5] YNAB is the other way round: you can use the app for 34 days before deciding. That matters because reviews of both apps mention bank connections that fail, and a long trial is the way to find out whether your banks work.

Students. College students get a free 365-day trial through the College Program, with proof of enrollment such as a student ID, transcript or tuition statement.[8] Simplifi's pages do not describe a student plan. For the full YNAB price picture see YNAB pricing, and for Quicken's see Simplifi pricing.

How budgeting works in each

YNAB is a method with an app attached. The method: for every dollar, ask "What's it for?" Plan for now (before the next paycheck), for later (non-monthly bills like car repairs), and for ease (get a month ahead).[10] Targets: set spending and savings goals per category and track progress at a glance.[9] Loan Planner: shows how much interest and time you save for each extra dollar paid toward debt.[9][11]

Simplifi starts from a plan. A spending plan that shows what you can spend per day.[1] Projected cash flow with "what-if" scenarios.[1] Tracks upcoming bills and subscriptions and shows all your subscriptions.[1] Savings goals, reports and insights.[1]

Put plainly, YNAB asks you to decide where each dollar goes before you spend it, and the app tracks you against that. Simplifi works the other way: it takes your income, subtracts the bills it can see, and tells you what is left to spend per day. If you want a number to glance at, Simplifi is closer. If you want to plan for bills that do not come monthly, such as car repairs, YNAB's method names that case directly. Our zero-based budget apps page compares more apps that work like YNAB.

Investments and extras

Investment tracking with cost basis, performance analysis and real-time quotes.[1] A retirement planner.[1] Support by phone (Monday to Friday), live chat seven days a week, an AI assistant after chat hours and a community forum, all included with every subscription.[2] On YNAB's side: Ad-free, with data encryption, two-factor sign-in and human support.[9]

Couples and sharing

Both let a partner in without a second subscription. The numbers are different.

  • Simplifi: Spaces sharing: you can share your data with one additional member. They need their own Quicken ID but not their own subscription, and must accept the invite on the web app.[1][3] Sharing is full access to the one shared space. Sharing specific accounts or features is not available yet, and the article says it "may be added" in the future. You can remove a member at any time.[3]
  • YNAB: YNAB Together shares one subscription with up to six people, "for the price of a single subscription." It is meant for partners and other close groups.[8][9][14] YNAB's pages don't say what each member sees. Its partner article says members can create and share budgets with each other under one subscription.[14]

Two catches stand out. Simplifi allows one additional member, and the invited person has to accept on the web app, because signing in on the mobile app prompts them to subscribe.[3] YNAB allows more people but its pages do not say what each member sees of the others' budgets or whether budgets can stay separate. Whichever you pick, test the invite on day one.

On splitting a shared cost, neither describes a way to divide a bill and track who owes whom. For that, see the best budgeting apps for couples or our guide to couples budgeting apps and privacy.

Platforms and bank connections

Both list iPhone, Android and web apps. Works on a computer, phone or tablet, and the site says even offline, with changes synced across devices. Widgets and an Apple Watch app are listed.[9][11] A web app plus mobile apps for iOS and Android, usable in the U.S. and Canada.[1][5] "Certain features not supported on mobile apps."[1]

On connections, Automatically categorizes transactions and connects to over 14,000 financial institutions.[1] Bank import links accounts and brings in transactions automatically. Apple Card import is also listed.[9] Reviewers of both describe trouble. Bank sync that is slow or drops. Reviews in June to October 2026 describe 12 to 24 hour delays and weeks without account data.[13] Bank connections: App Store reviewers in 2026 report main banks disconnecting, accounts that will not sync, and long waits for fixes.[7] The useful test is your own banks, in the first days.

What people say

These are public App Store reviews from 2026. Reviews skew toward people with a problem or a strong feeling, so read them as examples, not a vote.

Other complaints are about money and features: No trial: Quicken lists no free trial, and reviewers say they wish there had been one before paying.[5][7] Features removed: 2026 reviewers say rule creation on recategorizing and the "spending over time" reports were taken out, with some features sent to the website.[7] The App Store reviews are on Quicken's general app, so a few may be about other Quicken plans.

YNAB

App Store review (5 stars)· September 2026
“Budgeting works if you want to change your life. In 10 years of using YNAB we went from being a total of $250,000 in debt to $950,000 in net worth. It takes time and commitment to change.”

App Store review (1 star)· October 2026
“This app used to be great for tracking spending and making a budget but it now takes 12-24 hours to sync transactions.”

The other complaints are about cost and interface: Price. App Store reviewers call it "too expensive," and one mentions "Upped fees."[13] Interface changes. One reviewer says options were hidden "to reduce visual clutter."[13]

Choose Simplifi or YNAB

A third option

We make Wonderful, so weigh this as you would any maker's note. Simplifi and YNAB both put two people in one shared plan. If you and a partner keep your own money, Each person chooses, account by account, whether the other sees everything, only totals, or nothing.[17] Shared costs split evenly, by income, or any way you choose, and it keeps a running total of who owes whom.[18] Every paycheck gets a plan for bills, spending and saving before it lands.[18]

Wonderful costs $14.99 a month or $99 a year for both of you, with a free week first and no free plan after it. It has no iPhone or Android app yet, and it gives no investment advice. If you want investment tracking or a phone app, Simplifi or YNAB is the better pick.

Questions people ask

Simplifi vs YNAB: which is better?

It depends on how you like to budget. Simplifi shows $3.99 a month billed annually for the first year, has no free trial, and builds a spending plan with cash-flow projections. YNAB is $14.99 a month or $109 a year after a 34 day trial, and asks you to give every dollar a job before you spend it. Pick the method you will keep using.

Is Simplifi cheaper than YNAB?

In the first year, yes, if the $3.99 a month offer holds: about $48 against YNAB's $109 billed annually. Quicken's page says the offer is for first-year orders placed directly with Quicken and that renewal is at the then-current rate. Its page also shows $6.99 beside the offer without a label, so the second-year price is not clear from the page.

Does YNAB have a free trial and does Simplifi?

YNAB's pricing page says 34 days free, and no card is needed when you sign up directly with YNAB. Quicken's help center says Simplifi has no free trial but gives a 30-day money-back guarantee on purchases made directly on Quicken.com. Apple decides refunds on App Store purchases.

Which is better for zero-based budgeting, Simplifi or YNAB?

YNAB is built around it: its method page asks what each dollar is for, now, later and for ease. Simplifi's page says it starts from your income, subtracts bills and subscriptions, and shows what you can spend per day, and it lists zero-based and envelope methods among the ways people use it. For a zero-based habit with a written method behind it, YNAB is the closer match.

Can my partner use Simplifi or YNAB with me?

Yes in both, without paying twice. Simplifi shares one space with one additional member, who needs their own Quicken ID and must accept on the web app. YNAB shares one subscription with up to six people. Neither page describes sharing only some accounts.

Do Simplifi and YNAB connect to my bank?

Yes. Simplifi says it connects to over 14,000 financial institutions. YNAB imports transactions from your bank. Reviews of both in 2026 describe sync problems: YNAB reviewers report delays of 12 to 24 hours, and Simplifi reviewers report main banks that stay disconnected.

Which app has investment tracking?

Simplifi lists investment tracking with cost basis, performance analysis and real-time quotes, plus a retirement planner. YNAB lists reports on net worth over time and a Loan Planner for paying down debt, and its pages do not describe investment tracking beyond that.

Do Simplifi and YNAB work on Android?

Both list iPhone, Android and web apps. YNAB also lists an Apple Watch app. Simplifi's page notes that certain features are not supported on its mobile apps and that it works in the U.S. and Canada.

How do I cancel Simplifi or YNAB?

Quicken's help center says cancelling turns off auto-renewal and keeps access until the billing period ends. YNAB's pricing page does not state a refund policy, and one October 2026 App Store reviewer calls deleting the subscription a hassle. If you subscribed through Apple, cancel there.
