Simplifi's and Classic Deluxe's first-year monthly price times twelve (Quicken says the final price may differ and renewal is at the then-current price), YNAB's annual plan and Wonderful's yearly plan, which covers two people. Before tax.
How we compared
The two sides are not the same kind of product, so we compared what changes your day: what the first year and the second cost, whether you can try it, how you decide what to spend, what else it does, who can share it, and where it breaks. We read YNAB's pricing, features and method pages, Quicken's pricing and product pages and help articles, and the app stores. Every fact is numbered to its source at the end.
Price and trial
YNAB. $14.99 a month, or $109 billed annually, which the page shows as $9.08 a month. Paid monthly for a year it comes to $179.88. The pricing page says a 34-day free trial, no card needed when you sign up directly with YNAB. An app store sign-up may ask for card details. The App Store listing says a 30-day trial, not 34.[1][4] There is no free plan after the trial, and college students get a free 365 days with proof of enrollment.[1]
Quicken. Simplifi is $3.99 a month billed annually and Classic is $4.49 for Starter, $6.99 for Deluxe and $7.99 for Premier, also billed annually.[9][12] The discount is for the first year of new memberships ordered directly from Quicken; the pages' offer ends November 29, 2026 (11:59 PT).[12] "While we do not offer a free trial" there is a 30-day money-back guarantee from the original purchase date, for purchases made directly on Quicken.com.[23]
So the first year is about $48 for Simplifi and $84 for Classic Deluxe against $109 for YNAB. From the second year the gap is a question mark, because Quicken renews at rates its pages do not state. For Simplifi in detail, see Simplifi pricing in 2026; for YNAB, YNAB pricing in 2026.
How budgeting works
YNAB is a method first. The method: for every dollar, ask "What's it for?" Plan for now (before the next paycheck), for later (non-monthly bills like car repairs), and for ease (get a month ahead).[3] Targets let you set a spending or saving goal per category.[2] The cost is effort: YNAB asks you to plan each dollar before you spend it, which is the whole point of the app.[3]
Simplifi works the other way round. It starts from your income, subtracts bills and subscriptions, and shows what you can spend per day.[19] Projected cash flow with "what-if" scenarios.[19]
Classic is the traditional kind: you set an amount for each category. Budgets: a simple monthly budget on Starter, multiple budgets on Deluxe.[10][11]
Plainly: YNAB tells you where each dollar goes before it leaves. Quicken mostly tells you where it went, and where it is heading. People who like control choose YNAB. People who want a dashboard choose Quicken.
Investments, bills and reports
Quicken does more beyond the budget. Investment tracking with cost basis, performance analysis and real-time quotes.[19] Investing tools on Deluxe and Premier; Premier calculates IRR and ROI and analyzes buys and sells.[11][12] Built-in tax reports with export to TurboTax on Premier.[12]
YNAB's extras are narrower and aimed at spending and debt. Loan Planner: shows how much interest and time you save for each extra dollar paid toward debt.[2][4] Reports on spending, such as average grocery spend, and on net worth over time.[2][4] It does not list investment tracking beyond net worth.
Couples and sharing
- YNAB: YNAB Together shares one subscription with up to six people, "for the price of a single subscription." It is meant for partners and other close groups.[1][2][7] YNAB's pages don't say what each member sees. Its partner article says members can create and share budgets with each other under one subscription.[7]
- Simplifi: Spaces sharing: you can share your data with one additional member. They need their own Quicken ID but not their own subscription, and must accept the invite on the web app.[19][21] Sharing is full access to the one shared space. Sharing specific accounts or features is not available yet, and the article says it "may be added" in the future. You can remove a member at any time.[21]
- Classic: Quicken's subscription FAQ says Quicken "is currently designed for one user". A spouse or partner can be given access through Data Sharing in Quicken on the Web: they sign in with their own Quicken ID, need no subscription of their own, and see only the data file you share. It works only for a data file synced to the cloud, and it does not give them the desktop app.[16][17]
All three share on one subscription, and none of the pages we read describes splitting a bill between two people. For more on the Quicken side, see Simplifi and Quicken for couples.
Platforms and bank connections
Works on a computer, phone or tablet, and the site says even offline, with changes synced across devices. Widgets and an Apple Watch app are listed.[2][4] Simplifi is a web app with iPhone and Android apps, and its page notes that certain features are not supported on mobile.[19] Classic runs on Windows and Mac, with a companion phone app.[13]
On bank connections, Bank import links accounts and brings in transactions automatically. Apple Card import is also listed.[2] Automatically categorizes transactions and connects to over 14,000 financial institutions.[19] The complaints are similar on both sides. Bank sync that is slow or drops. Reviews in June to October 2026 describe 12 to 24 hour delays and weeks without account data.[6] Bank connections: App Store reviewers in 2026 report main banks disconnecting, accounts that will not sync, and long waits for fixes.[25] Sync: App Store reviewers in 2026 report cloud sync and bank sync failing, and categories changing after syncing to mobile.[15]
What people say
These are 2026 App Store and Trustpilot comments. Reviews skew toward people with a problem or a strong feeling, so read them as examples, not a vote. Simplifi's App Store listing is Quicken's general app, so a few comments may be about other Quicken plans.
YNAB
“Budgeting works if you want to change your life. In 10 years of using YNAB we went from being a total of $250,000 in debt to $950,000 in net worth. It takes time and commitment to change.”Read it where it was said ↗
“This app used to be great for tracking spending and making a budget but it now takes 12-24 hours to sync transactions.”Read it where it was said ↗
Price comes up too. Price. App Store reviewers call it "too expensive," and one mentions "Upped fees."[6]
Quicken
“...annual fee is far too much for the product”Read it where it was said ↗
“I’ve been waiting for a fix on my main bank for almost a month. Every time I contact they just say there’s no updates. Going to use something else.”Read it where it was said ↗
Features removed: 2026 reviewers say rule creation on recategorizing and the "spending over time" reports were taken out, with some features sent to the website.[25] Price: App Store and Trustpilot reviewers in 2026 complain about yearly price rises and an annual fee they call too high.[14][15]

A third option
We make Wonderful, so weigh this as you would any maker's note. It is a web app, for one person or two, that starts from the paycheck: Every paycheck gets a plan for bills, spending and saving before it lands.[28] For a couple, a partner joins with their own login at no extra cost and each person chooses what the other sees.[26] It costs $14.99 a month or $99 a year for the household, with a free week first and no free plan after. It has no iPhone or Android app yet, gives no investment advice and has no loan planner. If you want investing tools or a desktop program, Quicken is the better fit.
Questions people ask
YNAB vs Quicken: which is better?
It depends on how you want to budget. YNAB is built around a method: ask what every dollar is for before you spend it. Quicken gives you a spending plan (Simplifi) or category budgets (Classic) and adds investing, bills and reports. YNAB costs $14.99 a month or $109 a year; Quicken starts lower in year one.
Is YNAB or Quicken cheaper?
Quicken, in the first year. Simplifi shows $3.99 a month billed annually and Classic Deluxe $6.99, against YNAB's $109 a year. Quicken says those are first-year offers and renewal is at the then-current price, so compare the second year before you decide.
Is there a free trial for YNAB and Quicken?
YNAB has a 34-day free trial, no card needed when you sign up directly with YNAB; the App Store listing says 30 days. Quicken lists no free trial for Simplifi, but gives a 30-day money-back guarantee on purchases made directly from Quicken.
Is Quicken Simplifi the same as Quicken Classic?
No. Simplifi is a web and mobile app. Classic is desktop software for Windows and Mac with a companion phone app. Quicken says Simplifi cannot read Classic data, so it is a switch, not an upgrade.
Which is better for investments, YNAB or Quicken?
Quicken. Simplifi lists cost basis, performance analysis and real-time quotes, and Classic Premier calculates IRR and ROI. YNAB's features page lists spending and net worth reports and a loan planner, not investment analysis.
Which is better for a couple, YNAB or Quicken?
YNAB shares one subscription with up to six people, but its pages do not say what each member sees. Simplifi shares one space with one additional member, at no extra cost, and the partner sees everything. Classic is designed for one user. Neither company's pages describe splitting a bill.
Does YNAB or Quicken work better on a phone?
YNAB runs on a computer, phone or tablet and lists an Apple Watch app. Simplifi is a web app with iPhone and Android apps, some features of which are not supported on mobile. Classic's phone app is a companion to the desktop program.
Do YNAB and Quicken connect to my bank?
Both do. YNAB's bank import links accounts and brings in transactions automatically. Simplifi says it connects to over 14,000 institutions. Reviewers of both describe delays and disconnected accounts in 2026, so test your own banks during the trial.
How do I cancel YNAB or Quicken before I am charged?
YNAB says its trial ends on day 34 with no need to cancel and no charge unless you subscribe. Quicken's help center says cancelling turns off auto-renewal and you keep access until the billing period ends; refunds on purchases made through Apple or Google are decided by those stores.
